Just picked up a NIB Browing A-Bolt in .243 Winchester today. Have been looking for one since they discontinued them and finally found one on Gunbroker. I thought this would be the perfect rig to start my two little boys on.

Topped it with a Leupold VXII 3-9X40mm for load development...will be swapping that out for a VXII 2-7X33mm matte finish as soon as the loads are complete. Looking forward to trying it out on blacktail deer this October!

Purchased a box of Remington Core-Lokts and Federal Power Shocks to sight it in today...the Remington's were horrible with 2" three shot groups at 100 yards, the Federal's shot under 3/4"! At least I have a nice factory load until I can develop one for the 100 grain Partitions.

They will like the heck out of that thing. Get them out shooting some gophers this summer for practice and you'll be a super hero! Probably are already! Nice.

Sweet rifle. That will be a great rifle for the young'ins. My son loves the little M700 Compact. Plus it shoots really well. Really makes a great rifle for youths. Heck, I really like the little rifle myself. Scotty

Sweet rifle! I started out shooting a .243 and killed a bunch of deer with it. Good luck to your boys!

I sold my .234 Browning A-Bolt two years ago to buy another caliber. However, mine shot really well with Federal Blue Box 80 gr and Winchester Supreme 95 gr Ballistic Tips. It would group at about 3/4 inch with both. It did much better with handloads. I sold it to somebody like your self, who wanted to get his son his first rifle. He should really like it.

Here is what my son shoots. Love this little Remington. Not a fan of the stock, but until he outgrows it, it will stay. It shots great. Scotty

Jeez, Scotty, you know how I am. Will you PLEASE stop posting that picture? Nolan's gonna end up with a couple three rifles before you know it!

Kidding aside, that EXACTLY the way I want to go for him, SPS Compact or Youth or Ute or whatever it is Big Green calls it these days, in 7-08 and .243 with a Leupy fixed 4x and one of the Camo models in .223 with a 6x36 Leupy.

Something tells me there will be a McMillan McSwirley purchased for it at some point.

Of course, Winchester has come out with the Featherweight Compact in .243 and 7-08, so maybe I'll have to do some thinking on this.

If the Winchester Featherweight Compact was available when I bought my sons rifle, you can bet on what that would have been a picture of! This Remington does shoot excellent, but a FWT in 7-08 would have been awesome for my boy. Scotty

Well, one of the selling points for me on the Remmie is the spacer system that extends your length-of-pull an inch, to 13.5 (or what most full size rifles are). A 12.5" LOP is a little short for a guy who's 6'6" tall. And tends to crawl the stock. I suppose I could get a slip on recoil pad...

That Remington I have isn't adjustable, but being 6'5" I can shoot the rifle pretty decent. Really makes a nice rifle for Winter hunts when you have a ton of clothes on, and you made a good point of throwing a slip on, on the rifle.

I am a stock crawler myself, with a long neck, so I know what you are saying. Scotty
