My dad and I shot 800 yards today at my steel gong. I was using my 270 with 140g sbt's, and he was using his 7 mag with 150g btips. I was 4-4 on that gong, good enough to kill any deer at 800 yards. My dad was 2-5. We found 1 of my sierras and 3 of his btips. The btips lost there core at 800 yards. Doesn't matter how far you recover them, they always seem to shed there inner lead core. I've recovered 180g btips out of my 300 rum at 1150 yards and still the inner core is gone. His btips weighed average of 63g's. My single 140g sbt, kept its core intact and weighed 131g. The media was wet sand, distance again was 800 yards. 3 btips are on the left, sierra is on the right.

Rem Man,

Good shooting on the gong. Try shooting into some 1 gal milk jugs filled with water. Line up 7-8 in a row on a 2x12 plank (have some back at the bench giving you guidance to perfect alignment will help). I would think at 800 yds the core would stay in the jacket due to the lower impact velocity.
Should recover the bullet in jug # 6 or 7. Water is a hard test media for a bullet.

Hey, when do you leave for the service?

Guess I won't be shooting any BT's at 800 yards. But they have done well, for me, on quite a few animals under 300 yds.
