To solve a friendly disagreement with someone who claims to be an experienced reloader, what is the opinion of the learned on this site?

What is the "standard" +/- tolerance for case trim length?

And, what is too long or too short?

The "mic" is open.......

the standard is trim to .010 ..."(ten thousandths ) below the maximum case OAL.

+1 In a very few instances, manufacturers for good reason will recommend trimming more than the standard 0.010 inches (e.g. in cases of the FTX in lever guns).

Amazing how great minds think alike.

I told him that trimming to greater than -.010 MIGHT cause him some issues but he should stay as closs to the .010 as possible to avoid problems with case stretching. He has some cases that are trimmed to minus .020 which I said are too short. Then, am I in the wrong here or not?

Everything else being equal, he should trim to 0.010 less than maximum case length.
