last week, on gunbroker..... "winchester model 70 22-250" 18 minutes left - $400 opening bid - nobody's bid yet!
very vague description..... only 3 pictures . . . the stock looks beat and there is even mud on the buttplate. :?
I see the large mauser type extractor AH-HAH! and a drilled out bolt knob!! BINGO JACK!!!
It appears to be a pre-64 featherweight!!!! 8)
at that point I placed a $500 bid, because I felt like I didn't have much time.
but wait........ the 22-250 wasn't ever chambered in a pre 64 :|
I zoom in on one of the photos....... ser num 307731 yup! mfg in 1954!
so is it really a 22-250? and the grip cap looks funny
6 minutes left.... and I'm still the only bidder.....

tic toc tic toc tic toc

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!!!!!!!!! 8)
nobody else bid!!! I won it for $400!!!!!!
after winning on gunbroker, you can typically view the sellers phone number. I call them up!
He's an older fella, working for this pawn shop in Colorado...... he says an 18 year old kid lost it in a pawn, and grandpa is gonna be pissed
I ask him about barrel markings, trying to figure out what caliber it really is (hoping it was really a 22 hornet).
he says "well, my eyes can't see too good.... but it looks like 22-250 flag ace"

Flaig-Ace was a baddass gun shop in Pennsylvania back in the 60's, and this is one of their rifles!!! Now I remember where I've seen that funny grip cap!!!! HOT DAMN!!!!
I'm thinking this one needs to stay in uncle Chet's house for many many years!
.
.
fast forward to yesterday!!!
ITS HERE!

.
.
.
.
I'm purdy happy!
It has the full Flaig Ace treatment!
Hand carved, hand checkered stock
glassed bed the whole forend
The palm swell and the LOP are a little small for me
"FA" trigger shoe and a crisp 10oz sear (yeah very light!)
the wood/metal fit is as tight as I've seen
An absolute beautiful piece of American history!

Winchester made this action in 1954!!! and it is smooth as butter!!! They don't make em like this anymore!!!

YEAH!!!!!!
.

stamped on the bottom side of the barrel:

obviously a date..... I think.... the 22-250 wasn't commercially available until 1965, which means this gun was chambered as a wildcat (1962)..... kinda neat.
.
.
here's a pic of the full glass job... stable as hell, but you gotta wonder what happens when the barrel heats up.

.
.

The palm swell is tiny, and the LOP is just over 12"...... way uncomfortable for me.....
so I ordered this:

yup, that's right! I'm going to hand checker my stock! I really hope it turns out great!

SCORE! Nice grab Chet! That's a SUPER cool rifle to me as well. The 22-250 is one of my favorites. And a Model 70 in a Pre64, well, that is just too cool! Man, you scored, as you could make your money on just the action if you needed too!

Don't worry about that fully bedded stock. With old, hard, mature wood, it won't likely move as much as today's faster grown timber. My 338 is fully bedded and shoots pretty danged well! Congrats on such a great piece of American Rifle History! Wow. Pretty excited for ya.

That's a pretty nice gun for $400 like the others said you can't go wrong with this. Congrats. Sounds like a certain 18 yr old needs his but kicked however his loss is definitely your gain :)

I like the old guns, and obviously you appreciate them as well.

Congrats on a nice find. It should be a shooter as well as a good looking rifle!

Guy

Yes, you scored big time! Congratulations! That is a steal, for sure.
