Clean Barrel Syndrome

What is this "clean barrel syndrome". I have been told that a rifle may actually shoot tighter groups the dirtier the barrel gets. I'm not sure that I agree with this at all and it also goes against everything that I want in a rifle. I want the first shot from a totally clean barrel to be the most accurate and then fall off as fouling builds not the other way around. Can some one please enlighten me.

First shot from a clean barrel will often not hit where the rifle normally groups. My go to hunting rifles all hit within an inch of their group with a clean barrel. So before hunting season, all are fired a few times and put in the safe with dirty bores. I will clean them during the season if they get wet or if I feel dirt is in the barrel. Then I will foul them again before hunting with that rifle.Rick.

Rick is on the money with his answer. I don't look at it as a "dirty barrel" but rather as a barrel that is "seasoned". They do not get cleaned until the end of the season they are used in (unless wet etclll). I guess I have never shot enough rounds to put a rifle off of its accuracy.

Rick is spot on.

You need to keep your barrel clean and copper free for best accuracy.
I always "foul" my barrel with 2-3 shots just prior to the hunt and than give it a good scrubbing after the season.
