On Tuesday I came across a Whitetail fawn flopping around on my driveway as I drove in.

I waited to approach it when it calmed down and wondered what was the cause of its demise? I tilted its head up to see its tongue hanging out to the side, and was having trouble breathing.

It expired two-three minutes later. Come to find out it had died from EHD by the Idaho F&G Department. Evidently there’s been over one hundred cases reported in the area over the last month.

I just saw this fawn with its mother and sibling only a week ago in my backyard under two fruit trees.

The disease can kill an 8 to 36 hours after the fever sets in, and I’m certain this is the reason why I haven’t been seeing the typical numbers of deer and elk on my property.

What a shame, it’s a brutal existence that they are put to death by a tiny midge infected with this disease, or CWD.
