I'm heading to Montana in early October to elk and mule deer hunt. I'll be using my Sako 75 Hunter in 300 RUM. What load would work well on both animals??

I would look at the AB and PT in the 180 gr and 200 gr bullet weights.
The 200 gr AB is a true hammer for both deer and elk at long range.

Shoot both weights of bullets.....180's & 200's I seem to be the exception at this point.....so far I can't get the 200's to shoot, but have had great luck with the 180's. Either bullet out of that cannon will do just fine.

I'm using the 200AB in my RUM. Give'em a try. Many 300RUM owners on this site seem to be using 95gn of Retumbo for a load with 200ABs. I also have a load for 180ABs, using 98.5gn of Retumbo. Just an FYI, it may kick like a mule on the bench, but as when you have an animal in your cross hairs, I doubt you'll even feel it fire. At least this is what I experienced with my first animal taken with my RUM. Good luck in MT next Oct.

Guys, thanks for all the replies! :)

I have a pound of Retumbo and a pound of H4831sc already along with a box each of 180gr and 200gr PT's. Will the AB's hold together on a close range shot?

Also, I can't find any load data for the 200gr PT or AB with Retumbo?? Could someone help?

BTW, I'm a new guy here. Been hunting for 28 yrs. and have been reloading since the early 90's. But most of my reloading has been pistol.

JPC,

No worries with the 200 gr AB.
This will give you an idea as to how the AB's will perform.
338 RUM with a 225 gr AB. The test media was gallon water jugs.

JD, thanks for the pics!

POP, seems like your the Man for info on the Sako. I'm hoping to find a load my 75 likes and finish zeroing it in within the next couple of months. A Sightron SII 3-12 X 50mm plex reticle sits a top it. It's my first Sightron, so I hope it's a good one.
