Elk

I like to sneak around in the woods with a gun until I find Elk! haha. All the advise I can give you is hunt where the Elk are.

I agree, you have to hunt where the elk are.
Use enough gun and shoot Nosler bullets. If in rough terrain, take out the shoulders.

Going elk hunting in a week for the first time ,any secrets out there

On what topic exactly?

guns, loads, tactics, what?

K POP I dont now much about these animals .Takeing two rifles 7mm shooting a 160gr partion and my 300rum shooting a 180 gr barns.

You ought to have a lot of fun. Depending on location, some are in the rut about now... That's a great time to hunt a big bull... They tend to get stupid and aggressive, and they will lose a fight with your partitions!

Don't overdo the calling, just try to locate one and hope that he'll come to you while you wait, ready. It's tougher if you have to go to him.

Best of luck! Elk hunting is awesome...

Either caliber will work fine. You didn't mention if you were guided or not . The further back you can get from the other hunters the better but you have to bring the meat out so it's a catch 22 if you dont have horses or mules or a quad trail. You're in a great state for elk but if you don't happen to get one don't feel bad. Un-guided hunters who aren't on a private ranch only connect about 1 in 7 trys. But it's the most wonderfull hunt I've known in the most beautifull country God created. Have fun and Good Hunting!

One good peice of advise is that elk rome far more than white tail deer so fresh sign for deer is old sign for elk. Meaning a fresh elk track still has an elk's foot in it. Don't was time setting around tracky spots follow them until you actual see or hear elk.

Where are you going to hunt? Is it steep mountains with heavy timber or more open Colorado sage? As said elk move a lot under pressure. Look for (as said) fresh sign. The lack of sign doesn't mean elk aren't there because they could of just been pushed there. They are probably the hardest animal to hunt in the continent because they will travel miles if pushed out of where they are. My experience is that the best first move is the call the local game warden and get information. I know this sounds like a lot of work but I've found the wardens to be great sources of information and they are usually more compliant than asking the locals.
They know where the elk are (altitude and area) wise and they can supply you with kill locations from the previous seasons. the other source is taxidermists in the area. They are looking for business and they know exactly where there mounts came from. Thats a major, unknown secret. The other thing is you probably won't kill, or even see, elk on the first venture if you don't have some direction. If you're going to Idaho I can give you info. If not check with the above. This information is your best bet by far. I know. I've been hunting elk in a lot of states for far too long.
Good Huntin
