Take a look at the pictures and try to guess what bullet was used. 338 caliber, 13 rounds fired.

I witnessed that amount of copper smear from virtually all manufacturers' bullets of virtually all sorts. I would guess a rough bore has caused that amount of fouling. On calibre sizes greater than .308, I use a lot of G96 Copper Solvent. I'm not certain this is manufactured any longer, but I still have several bottles that I parcel out for my own rifles. For stainless barrels of .308 calibre and smaller, I use a lot of Sweet's 7.62. For chromoly barrels of .308 or smaller, I use Barnes CR-10 Bore Cleaner. Ultimately, if it becomes obvious that I'm working with a rough bore, I use J-B Bore Cleaning Compound. It requires some elbow grease, but a rough bore can be slicked up so it shoots without such fouling.

That's a lot of fouling no doubt! I also like using barnes cr-10 for copper but even that probably isn't going to get all that out. I had a long shooting session recently working on a load for my brothers 30.06 and afterwards there was quite a bit of fouling even though I was scrubbing the bore in between powder changes. I used the cr-10 and even used a brush but i still couldn't get all the copper fouling out.
I was about to stop for the day and then i found a half can of outers foaming bore cleaner in the cabinet tucked away behind other stuff that i forgot i had. I pulled it out and filled the bore full of foam. Low and behold after a 20 minute wait I pushed a few patches thru the bore and they came out blue and the copper was gone. I'd used this stuff before but don't recall it being that effective on copper fouling. Needless to say I ordered me a couple more cans to keep on hand.

Hornady interlock was the bullet. I have never had the barrel copper up like that with Barnes or Nosler. It did clean up easy enough with wipe-out though. Just found it odd that the Hornady copper fouled like that. I've shot Hornady bullets through it in the past, older box of bullets and not seen such copper. These bullets were of the newest make of bullet.

Wonder if the copper has changed a bit from old bullets to newer?

That is a pot full of copper Bill. That was surprising to me as well.

Have you hit the bore with an IOSSO or JB's at all? Even if the bullet is a little different, still seems like it is stripping off a bunch of copper. I thought my Remington 35 Whelen was bad!

My 35 Whelen rebore looked like that right out of the gate with Speer HotCor's. 20-30 rounds in with cleaning using gunslick to take the copper out and it doesn't foul that bad anymore. It still likes copper, but it's not that bad anymore.

Has it smoothed out any over time?

My M70 FWT in 7x57 used to foul like that. Couldn't shoot a magazine full before the bore was full of copper. Made no difference which bullet I shot. Spent the better part of the next day with the Sweet's and still had copper. Finally said, "What have I got to lose?" and got a firelapping kit.Kit had three grits. Instead of using jacketed bullet per the instructions I used cast lead and instead of ten rounds with each grit I only used five. Idid a fourth round charging the bullets with JB Bore paste. I still get some fouling but nothing serious and it cleans up fairly quickly with CR-10.

Neither Barnes or Nosler copper up like that. It's gone now thanks to wipe out but it really took me by surprise. It cleaned out pretty quick almost like a widely dispersed thin layer rather than a thicker layer.

No Scotty I have not used IOSSO or JB's. May very well do so here real soon though.

Likely due to composition of the jacket. Gilding metal has differing compositions depending on manufacturer.
