Not sure where to put this one,
BUT,
I am looking for another gun safe, for powder, primers and some guns. I am definitely concerned about price, and need at least a 39"safe. Any suggestions? I have found a few areound $1599 from Liberty, Browning and Rhino. My older safe is Fort Knox, but i want to save some cash...
thanks,
Hardpan

A while back, I think it was Costco that had some Liberty safes at a decent price.

NEVER store powder in a safe. You are making a bomb and may be breaking the law as to powder storage for your area. It is unsafe anyway. A powder cabnet has to have a weak side/top so if the powder goes up the pressue will be relieved and not become a bomb.

Divernhunter is correct about the storage (against the law??? I don't know) . See my link that has the National Fire Protection Association's recommendations for powder storage and transportation.

Guys,
thanks for the warning. I had not thought about it at all, but i understand perfectly once I do that powder in a safe would very dangerous. Will use a different solution.,

hardpan,
There may be state or local ordinances about the amount of powder and proximity of primers that your local gun shop may be able to advise you on also. I guess if I were a fireman I would be very concerned about such things too.

The federal maximum for black powder without a proper powder magazine is 4 pounds. The magazine must have metal sides, and a wooden interior (6"of soft wood I think"). I'm sure there are other design requirements I'm not aware of. Some guys like to make them out of old refrigerators. It's an easy way to take care of the "metal sided" requirement.

I store my powder in large plastic/rubber tubbs and then stack then up. Also have some on top of one of the gun safes and more in a couple of apple boxes in the closet. Actual amount of powder is unknown as if I did know I would be worried. Usually buy 4-16 of the 8lb jugs at a time to save costs.
