The heron is notoriously difficult for me to photograph. Though they stand motionless, they're also very alert to danger, and very quick to fly away from perceived danger. Often, they also hang out in areas that are difficult to approach.

For this photo, I paddled my kayak upstream against the current of the Columbia. I went past the heron, but at least a hundred yards away, well out into the river. I paddled a good quarter mile upstream from him, then turned and drifted slowly towards him, moving as little as possible in the little kayak. Finally, I was able to get some heron photos worth sharing:

Again, a capital effort has paid off in a great shot of a shy bird. I watched them many times on the small lakes around the Fraser Valley.
