On a canister of Hodgdon there are two numbers, a 7 digit number and a 4 digit number beneath it. Which is the lot number? I'd like to get a couple 1 pound canisters of the same powder (cheaper than an 8 if it doesn't work well for me) but want to verify which number(s) should match.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I am guessing but I would assume that the 4-digit number is a Julian date code for the lot. That would make the 7-digit number the lot number. I am basing this on 40 years of manufacturing experience and how we coded our product with the date code being 4 numbers. Of course I could be wrong?

I had the same thought - car parts are often Julian date coded - but was hoping for some confirmation.

The 7 digit number is the date code, the 4 or 3 is the lot number.

From 2 1lb containers of H335:
1020909 - 1lb Feb 2 2009
582 - Lot #.
1051210 - 1lb May 12 2010
2686 - Lot #
From 8lb container of Titegroup:
80214122316 (long number on orange sticker)
8 lb Feb 14 2012 Lot# 2316

All my 1 lb containers have the 1 as the first digit and 8 lb containers have the first digit as 8.

All the date codes coincide with the purchase date which I write on each container.

Thanks.

I just found a somewhat local supplier who will buy for me a few canisters from the same lot, so that saves me from digging through shelves checking numbers. However, the info will be useful in the future.
