I went up to Elk county Pa and shot a pile of Elk Saturday with my cell phone.
These are wild Elk and not on a preserve. There's a couple of 6X6 Bulls and 4X4 Bulls cows and calves. I was with in 100yds of the one 6X6 that was bedded with a cow watching over him The other 6X6 was in a field with a large herd of cows and several small bulls.
I was in and near Benezette, Pa and Medix, Pa.
Sorry for the cell phone pictures, we forgot the camera. If you click on the pictures they should enlarge.

I understand it's a point system and a non resident has a better chance. Since I live in MD I'm considering very hard on putting in for one next year since the season opens tomorrow.

I have heard that PA is producing some fine bulls. Good to see these herds in the east again.

very good truck driver , I'm glad you made it up to see the elk .

don't hold me to these numbers as being exact , I'm going from memory . there are about 21,000 or 23,000 applicants . they are now issuing about 100 total licenses , with about 20 being bull licenses . there is a preference points system that has been in effect for about 13 years . when a hunter draws a cow tag his accumulated points are gone and he can apply again the very next year . if the hunter draws a bull tag his points are gone and he can't apply for another license for 5 years . I'm not sure if nonresidents have a preference over residents or not , this is the first time I've heard this . nonresidents do for sure have an equal chance of drawing . I heard the special tag has been filled already , it was supposed to be about a 420" bull . this limited hunt sure makes some big elk .

here are a couple links with some info on the pa elk hunt .

I agree it's nice to see elk back in their native homes.
Rodger I wish you luck in drawing a tag and tagging an elk.

Very cool. I hunted near St Mary's in Elk County a few years ago and was almost run over by a 6x6 bull. He put on the breaks at about 10 yards.
Elk are indeed an awesome animal.

Jim I stayed in St Mary's over night before driving home, it's 4-5hr drive one way but it was worth every minute just to see the Elk and in such quantity and quality roaming free and easy. I also had to pick up a case Of Straubs Lager while I was there since I have to drive into Pa to get it and it's not available out side the state. I'm not a big Beer drinker but I make an exception when it comes to Straubs because it's just that good and always taste fresh.

I know the title is miss leading but I honestly experienced the thrill of pulling the trigger on each Bull I saw when I took his picture with out killing him.

when I read the first line I was hoping you were going to say you went up took lot of pics, then connected this morning with a rifle.

The PA system is one that some love (me) some hate: I guess it isn't a "true" preference point system by some people's views, as having more points just means your name is in the hat more often. I believe this year mine should have been in there 7 or 8 times. No difference in chances for a non-resident vs resident, everyone is in the same drawing randomly selected by a computer.

There are two extra tags available: one for auction, and another for raffle by the Keystone Elk Country Alliance (not a site I would promote on every site, as I want to keep the odds in my favor, but you all are pretty good folks here)

Pretty well covered, but yeah, the chances of drawing an elk tag here in PA are slim. Very slim. BUT.....for those who draw, there are some real nice elk out there to be taken.

I put in every year now, but I missed a few of the pref point years. I think I have 6 or 7 points now. I just consider it a donation to the game commission each year, and if I get picked, bonus!

Great pictures! Elk are some awesome animals. Once they take ahold of your attention it's hard to not wanna be around them.

Thanks Scotty, they are addictive for sure, almost like seeing whales breach for the first time and then you can't keep your eyes off the water hoping to see more. (y)

Its been a while since I saw a whole one in a pickup!!! I think maybe 15 or so years ago.

Rodger, thank you for this post!! Those Elk look to be in fine shape, I sure hope you get a crack at one with your AI.

Blessings,
Dan
