Several months back I traded a 308 for a 7 Rem Mag Winchester Mdl 70 Black Shadow. I wanted the rifle to build a 7 STW out of.
For some reason I thought the action was too short to make an STW out of.The rifle shoots really well with 65 grs of RL22 and 160 ABs so I was content to leave it alone.

Fast forward to yesterday.
My ace compadre shows up at my house with his new/ previously enjoyed Mdl 70 in 7 STW.
It's a CRF with VERY nice blueing.
Right of the bat I could see it had a high dollar aftermarket stock on it.
We took it apart to see if it was glass bedded.

Well while we had his rifle apart I grabbed mine out of the safe and we took it apart too.
After pulling them both apart and measuring EVERYTHING we determined two things.

I need to remove the spacer that is welded into the back of the magazine and find a magazine follower.
My smith has a reamer.
The 7STW becomes a reality.

Now if I can just get the 264 done.

Stay tuned for more details!

Congratulations on the new project. The 7 STW is an impressive round and it will prove to be a flat liner.
Keep us posted on the project, looking forward to your upcoming range reports.

I never could quite convince myself to turn one of my 7mm Rem mags into the STW - but was sorely tempted to do so. It seems like a natural for the long & lethal 175 Nosler Partition...

Go for it!

Hmmm, maybe I might just go ahead with the .300 H&H project.... And the .340 project...

The 7 STW is a thumper. I've watched my partner in the field take quite a variety of game with that round. I've worked up loads for quite a few, and all shot very well indeed.

Corey,

Depending on stock design and weight of the rifle package, the recoil is not at all excessive. Charged with a 160 grain AB and a stiff charge of RL25, in an average rifle, the recoil for a 7mm RM would be about 23 or 24 ft. lb. For a similarly loaded 7mm STW, the recoil would be around 27 ft. lb. While there is a measurable difference, there would be little difference in felt recoil.

I like recoil

Just kidding.I'm not really recoil shy and yes stock design plays a major role in perceived recoil.

For example I had a Browning Abolt in 300 Win Mag that would literally give me a headache after three or four rounds from the bench.I replaced the stock with a synthetic from Bell and Carlson and it tamed it down quite a bit. The rifle didn't shoot to my standards so I gave it to my brother and bought a Vanguard in 300Bee. Both rifles weigh about the same and shoot about the same load but the Bee I could shoot an entire box of shells through and not feel as though I had been runover by a bus.
( for the record my brother had a brake put on that kicking SOB)

I have a buddy that shoots a Savage 116 in 7STW.The rifle has a synthetic stock on it and all the weight is in the front end.Shooting it off of sandbags the recoil is comparable to a 7 Rem Mag or the 300 Bee.
Shooting at critters,I never feel it.

Interesting. I noticed quite a bit of change in recoil going from 165 grain to 180 grain bullets in my 30-06 this year.

I like the STW. I had a sendero in one.. Used it for long range speed goating. 140 BT's at 3500 fps.

Damn Pop that is smoking!

I'm lookin more towards 160 ABs at 3200-3300 for a long range whitetail load.
AND if I ever get the chance to head out west again on an elk hunt, I figure that would be plenty of medicine for a Wapiti.

I can see the 140s outa my 280 but a 7 Rem or a 7 STW,I'm gonna be shooting at least a 160.
More whoopass when it gets there whatever the range.

What does one kick like?

The 7mm mags are easy on the shoulder. Felt recoil from a 7 STW is less than a 300 Win Mag.

I like my STW quite well and its really a hummer at long range. I am loading very stout loads of H-1000 (old manual) with a 160 TSX and AccuBond, at past 3100. I also shoot a 300 Win Mag (extensively) and find the STW more manageable off the bench. Seems not a sharp and quick as the Win Mag. You will love it !!!
