GySgt Carlos Hathcock, Vietnam. Warrior. Marine. Sniper. Hero.

He was also our national champion 1,000 yard prone shooter. No rest. Factory "match"ammo. No "bipod" just a good man, with a good rifle. He knew his stuff. Rest in Peace warrior.

BTW, I teach that position in my rifle classes, and attribute it directly to The Gunny.

Semper Fi.

I just finished the Marine Sniper :93 Confirmed Kills book.

Definitely an amazing man.

Hathcock was assuredly a legend. I read his book quite a few years ago. He did know his stuff.

Very few people fire enough rounds from field positions these days to ever find "their" position or positions....shooting positions can be a very personal thing depending on the shooters physique (long and tall, short and fat, tall and fat, etc, etc...)

I've been working with my wife on this lately...or rather...letting her work on it...I gave her some tips and advice then just stepped back and told her to find a steady position and fire when she thought she had one....her first try, the recoil caused the gun to come up in front (stick weren't vertical when she fired)...all I said was "you gotta drive the sticks too, they are now part of your rifle...its all gotta work together"...she adjusted her position and tried again, better but still not quite there...follow through was terrible...I said "the bullet isn't gone the instant the trigger breaks...gotta hold it for just a little longer"....with that it clicked, for the next 10 rounds when she fired the rifle it looked as if it were being shot from a vice, only very slight movement from recoil, and straight back...those 10 rounds went into a group the size of a softball...at 350 yards....she's coming along nicely.

Shooting positions...I believe the key is to be adaptable...make whatever you have work, somehow, some way...just make it work for you...the old Creedmore match photos come to mind...man, those guys got creative.

I've read Hathcocks book also...very good book.

Great photo, that rilfe barrel could have been built from a truck axle.

Gunnery Sergeant Hathcock was part of the reason I wanted to become a Marine.

I love shooting from the ground, wrapped up in a sling, shooting off my elbows. Guy reminded me some time ago you don't need a bench to shoot good groups and once I got back the ground and started shooting, I got back into the groove and had a whole lot of fun too!

...you don't often hear about Gunny Hathcock going back into a burning amtrack & dragging out his Marines, w/ severe burns to his head & hands...

No, you dont, yet that was an incredible act. And cost him dearly.

Just goes to show the caliber of the man.

It sound like he was quite the man. The world needs a lot more heroes like that right now!

Blessings,
Dan

Hathcock was a REAL sniper. Field craft unbelievable, marksmanship, doing it without laser range finders wind meters, mil-dot scopes etc. shooting basically a fat barrel hunting rifle with a wood stock with a 8 power target scope with a field of view like looking through a key hole.

Killed a few deer from that shooting position pictured.

I got to talk with him a few times. He used to come to the gun show in Richmond VA at the Showplace with the guys from Iron Brigade Arms.

Plus he was pretty fond of the old Model 70 30-06 as well.....

That's the sitting position I use with my back up against something, but I pull my other knee up to support my right elbow as well.

I saw some Arab on Fox news tonight asking for an apology from the US for the Hathcock movie. He did not get one from Fox!

I have even heard of him living here in Canada, wasn't he known as "the white feather" because he left a calling card behind?
