A long-time friend of mine and co-worker has asked me to teach him to hunt. This should be interesting for both of us. He's a hiker & bicyclist, but for some reason at about 40 years old he's decided he wants to get in on the hunting and fishing scene.

Within the next few weeks we'll take up fly fishing. A brother-in-law gave him a fly rod several years ago but he's never used it. Great excuse for me to get out to some of my favorite waters anyway!

Then, he wants to hunt mule deer this fall! Cool. That's what I do. We've done some shooting together with pistols & AR-15's, and he's safe with a gun, but he's never hunted before, and I don't think he's ever shot a rifle larger than a .223 AR-15.

Have two up for "loan" will have to see how he does with them:

1. .30-06 M1917 .30-06 in a B&C stock with a 6x Leupold sighted in at 200 yards with 165 grain Nosler solid-base or partitions at about 2750 fps. It's a good old rifle, well suited to hard use.

2. .25-06 Rem 700 CDL with a 6x Leupold spitting a 100 or 115 grainer out at well over 3000 fps with either. This is the rifle I've used to take 5 mule deer in the past 5 years. Good thing about it for a beginner is the decided lack of recoil. Generally I keep it sighted in at 300 yards.

I'll haul both of those rifles out to the range with him and see which he likes, then make sure we get out at least once a month for shooting from 50 - 300 yards with them. Should be fun! I find myself looking forward to this. Told him that he could borrow one of my rifles this year to see if he likes hunting, and if he likes it, then he can buy his own darned rifle.

So, it looks like my son and I will have company in deer camp this October!

Guy,

Sounds like you will have a lot of fun with a new hunter. It is very rewarding!

Guy,

What a great opportunity. Passing on the knowledge we have gained increases our enjoyment of the sport exponentially. You'll have to post pictures of his first mulie.

Just had a thought - I'll suggest that he put in for a doe tag - it will greatly increase the odds of success afield if he draws a doe tag...

Cool. Public land mulie hunting here is pretty iffy on bucks. Average success rate hovers around 25%. I've been on a lucky streak the past five years or so... A doe is a LOT easier to locate and take. That's why I was glad my son drew a doe tag last year, it had been a couple of years since he tagged a mulie.

I'll suggest that he put in for a doe tag.

Great idea, Guy. A successful hunt for most new hunters is more likely to consist of meat on the ground.

That is a wonderful opportunity for you. I am sure you will both have a great time and that you will enjoy it fully as much as he will. He has a super instructor to work with.

Better late than never I say. Welcome him into the fold and mentor him well. Nothing like getting a new hunting buddy to show the ropes. I'd start him out on the .25-06 and move up to the .30-06 when he has a good handle on it. I agree with the doe tag idea as well.

I can't wait for my step daughter to start hunting if she ever wants to, she will be my next full time hunting partner. Right now she talks a good game about hunting elk and pronghorn and is learning to shoot her .22 lr. She says she wants to hunt but we will see, when it comes time to pull the trigger on her first animal. Even if she can't I'll have enjoyed every minuet of it.
