I've been thinking about it for a long while and ended up trading a firearm for a Matthew's Mission Craze.
I also got a free lesson from a former coworker. He's a pretty good local shooter that places in his share of tournaments. With all the hassle with out of country travel I'm thinking of going for Newfoundland moose with stick and string. My instructor said I was doing good for a first time. At 20 yards I was keeping six arrows on a pie plate.
I'll keep working on it through the Summer.

When I hunted with a bow, many years ago, I shot 100 arrows a day for 3 months before the season at 20 yards, just to tune up.

That's what I'm going to do so I can get consistent. Got a good start.

I've never shot a compound bow before and never really shot a bow before except for ten arrows at Boy Scout camp that never even hit the target. :)

You should be able to get down to 2 inch groups or better at 20 yards after some practice?

Congratulations Vince.. Bow hunting is generally more close and personal than rifle. Are you using a mechanical release? I was old school when I bow hunted, used fingers figuring a release was one more thing to drop at the wrong moment.. I found a few arrows every day is better than 100 at a time. Less chance of fatigue... Best of Luck

There is no greater thrill than that which comes from having big game within bow range....

No greater challenge either... Its not easy to fool some critters (old whitetail bucks)

Vince,

Mathews is an excellent choice and also what I shoot. Bow hunting will make you a better rifle hunter!
The more you shoot, the better you will get and the longer your effective range will be. You can easily be proficient out to 50 yds. Look at Muzzy 100 gr 3 blade broad heads. They smash bone, penetrate deep and cut a nice big hole for blood trailing.
Good luck with the stick n string.

Thanks guys. I'm considering it for Newfoundland but if not there then for Bear for sure in Arizona.

The leg shot was one that got away before I was ready. I made a hand adjustment and it closed things right up. :)
