I found an old box of Nosler 150 grai.n solid base hollow points. What was the intended use with these bullets?
I used to use 165 grain Sierra HP bullets on deer with good results and am wondering if this Nosler bullet could be used for hunting purposes.

The solid base was their standard hunting bullet. Eventually, they put a plastic tip on it and called it the ballistic tip. Those will work just fine on deer.

I didn't read that right the first time. Didn't see they were HP. Cut one in half or shoot it into water jugs and see how it holds up. If it has a solid base, I bet it will be good to go.

Wow - I don't remember a hollow point version of the Solid Base. Soft points yes, but hollow point? Still, that was a long time ago and I likely just don't remember it.

I'd try a few into the water jugs. See how they penetrate & expand. 30 min work on your part to let you know one way or another if they are likely to work well on game.

I found some data in an old manual. It says they are HP match bullets. The hollow point on these are really small.

I shot varmint with Nosler 50/52gr HPBT Match Solid Base bullets in some of my 22 cal varmint rifles.

Nosler manual #1 they explain that HPBT Match Solid Base bullet was introduced 1975 for the BR guys and 30 cal besides 150gr they also made 168gr HPBT Match SB.

That's right, I'd forgotten about those! Thanks.

And here I am, a fellow who has sent thousands of Nosler HPBT match bullets downrange, enough to wear out a few barrels...

That is alright Guy most of the time I don't remember some of the things I did last week !
I never used Nosler Solid base bullets always partitions but that was because I did not punch paper very often .
The advice given here will give you the info you need to see if they will work in a hunting situation.

Blessings,
Dan

Those bullets are NOT meant to be hunting bullets. They are not meant to expand. That HP is just the way the bullet has to be made. It may expand, explode, pencil through, tumble and exit backwards, duck and dive or go in behind a shoulder turn and come out an ear of a deer. You never know with match bullets.

^^^^ That is one of the best descriptions of a match bullet used for hunting I have ever heard. Also 100% correct.

I wasn't trying to imply he should hunt with match bullets. I just didn't remember that model of Nosler bullet. Some HP bullets (Sierra GK's) are designed to be big game bullets, and didn't know if these were similar. Still, it would be fun to cut one in half or shoot it into jugs and see how it holds up. I love the bullet testing pages.
