QL for 338/06 Ackley Improved OR 338/270HGT

Well, I just couldn't stand it, having the little Wby MKV UL A-Square new girl reamed to the Ackley 40 deg. No need whatsoever, I just love Ackley cases. I can still shoot my reg 338/06 for fireforming, etc. I have 30-06 brass based loads, and expect them to be a tad short when FF. In that case, I'll have an extra #3 SH cut down so I can still use my LEE FCD. The one for the reg 338WM works swell on '06 necked up. Im also going to have the Bubbafied bedding removed and have it bedded properly.
Anyhow, can I get some 63K QL for the Ackley with the 175HH, 200 NBT, 210 TTSX, 225 TTSX (225 Hornady?) If too much to ask, just the 175, 200, 210? Thanks so much. I'm jazzed! The HGT is simply the 270 necked up/FF aka 338 Sherman ( or so close) I already gathered up all the brass I'm going to use ('06) Since Huntington's closed shop, I havent found a source of RWS brass, which is what I would use for either the HGT or Sherman, but I'm not trying to "match" 338WM speeds anyhow. If I did, I would follow Fotis example and have it reamed to that 338 RPM! Isn't this fun??? I just like to hit elk "hard", just my nature I guess?

Man, I'd wonder if you couldn't just do a 338 RPM Jim? I kinda thought about that for a second, since it is easy to find dies and Peterson has brass for it.

Thanks for the data there Uncle Scotty! I found some new Remington 35 Whelen brass, going to just neck down instead of necking up. I "should" still be able to use my unaltered LEE 338WM FCD.

The place I'm looking at for cow elk here in Utah said they get the majority of their shots from 200-300yds, perfect! I admire the 500-1000yd Long Range Hunters "who can really do it" , pile them up (not the fibbers/wannabes out there and the wounders/game losers). However, for me, I just have never been comfortable shooting past 350-400yds. I think its two reasons...(1) I'm not a good judge of that invisible prairie wind past 300 and (2) growing up in the woods of East Texas I averaged shooting game with a rifle around 50yds. It took me 20yrs to get a longer shot out on a pipeline ROW, ha (276 steps) All my Bow kills in Texas were under 15 yds (I did bow-kill two Mule Deer in Co, 35 and 45 yds) Open country challenges me! ha There's also all the Technical stuff that goes into really doing it right. I missed out on going to Sniper School (from Basic Training, 1971) by a guy beating me by one point! That surely might have changed my outlook, having that training, but alas. I burned out on Technical Stuff from my hitch over 50yrs ago in Army Artillery as Chief Computer in Fire Direction Center, ha. I just want to enjoy my hunt, hopefully with friends, enjoy being in the field with my rifle and follow wound channels with a sharp knife, see how my handloaded bullet did, ha.

Now I have to start all over! I ha. I had my rifle reamed out to the Ackley Improved, which means the smith had to set the barrel back to clean up/make the correct Headspace, plus a crush fit. This, in effect, did away with the longer throat it had before, as an A-Square. My previous load of 3031/175 HH is too hot now. No sweat, I dropped back to R17 and 59gr gives me almost 2900fps. Way plenty for how I hunt. I never clocked that 3031 load, but "admittedly", it was on "the warmer side of things", lol.
Interestingly, I necked down 35 Whelen Brass this time in order to have a false shoulder for FF. It was new Hornady Factory Primed brass. It is on the softer side compared to RP, for sure to Winchester, I feel. I used 46gr AA4064 and the Speer 225 just touching the Lands too.
To insure a good shoulder forming , I did my "first time ever for me" Candle Anneal, ha. Seemed to help too. I also annealed some of the FF necked up new Winchester 30-06 brass and FF to the Ackley Chamber. I dropped back to 45gr AA4064. Formed up swell. This was the "older Blue Bag Winchester, not Red Bag". Pretty tough brass. I'm going to work up a 200 NBT and Varget load next, starting pretty low and going up. Tons of fun! I don't regret going to the Ackley as I am a Sucker for the case shape, ha. I felt the same way about Blondes, in fact I passed on a Brunette before found a Blonde that would Marry me!
