Does anyone on the forum know if any of the major rifle manufacturers make a left handed bolt in the 35 Whelen?

Blessings,

No but it probably wouldn't take much to rebarrel a Savage action to 35 Whelen.

I don't know about "new" Whelans but Remington and several others make quality LH rifles, its not horribly expensive to rebarrel one. Mine is a 721 from the 50's. ER Shaw did a nice job for a good price. Of course you can also watch guns international, cabelas and numerous othe web sites for one that is for sale. Might be a while however.
Good luck I love mine.

Any left hand 25-06, 270Win, or 30-06 could be rebarreled to 35Whelen for about $500-700, depending on what you decide to have done. I'd suggest truing the action while the barrel's off - it's like always replacing the throwout bearing when you replace the clutch, you do it because you're already in there, and won't be back for a long while.

If you bought a decent Rem700 used, you could end up getting it all done for under $1000, depending on what your used gun price initially. It could maybe be done for well under $1k, if you shop hard and get a deal on the donor rifle, as well as make a good deal on the rebarrel job. It sounds a little expensive at first, but then think about the fact that you'll have a truly custom rifle. You can add a nice stock if you'd like, now or later, and make it a nice, one-of-a-kind piece.

I am thinking that ER Shaw did the work on my Whelan for around $500 I might be wrong but you might visit their web site to see. Some people don't like them but I got a quality job and the rifle shoots well. The rifle cost $65 new, with the Chet Brown stock, the new barrel and the Leupold Vari X III I have about $1100 in it now, but I got most of the stuff pretty cheap.

Sask, I hope you get the Whelen bug! It is truly a great cartridge. As the others that have taken game with them, it stands pretty tall for a 350 yard cartridge. With a good scope, with some ballistic reticles, or turretts, you would have a solid thumper. Scotty

I agree. Or a 7600 Pump!

I love a 35 Whelen, had a 700 CDL but it was not near as accurate as my 358Win and since I have so much experience with a 30-06 and have one with tons of reloading supplies for them I just can't find room in my heart to own one again. Especially since I am now throwing a 220gr bullet down range out of my 30-06 at over 2600fps and a 240gr Woodliegh at 2494-2508fps, so I just don't need the whelen. In fact if the 358Win didn't shoot so dog gone good I wouldn't need it. I have everything from varmint, big game and defense covered with the following cartridges.

5.56mm Nato

260 Remington

30-06 Springfield

358 Winchester

I have 20 more different rounds to soot groups for, before I finish my re-do load work for my 30-06. I will admit that I am really tired at this point, because this has been a long drawn out trip I took doing this re-do of my loads and some new ones, even with POP's help with program info to save time and money.

But one thing for sure, with the new powders and bullets, today the 30-06 is just plain awesome in what it is able to handle from 125 gr to 240gr bullets. I will be glad when I finish. I will have specific loads for specific game and one over all load to catch most if I am not sure of terrain and game that will be encountered.

I think you need a good left hand 30-06

Not that I want to go off on a tangent here, but the ? is one of the main reasons I have taken a liking to the TC Encore. While in some cartridges such as the .35 Whelen, it is a custom barrel proposition, making it somewhat more costly. But I sure like the versatility of switching barrels to match the needs.
Yes it's single shot, but I don't really consider that a handicap. Just a matter of hunting to within reasonable range, and making the first shot count. Although, reloading is quick for follow up shot with practice.

Hi Bullet, thank you for your information on the 30-06. I am not sure if you have read any of my post, but I am a guy that owns 5 rifles in 270 cal:). I grew up with such a dislike for the 06 at one time I could not look at one.
Now I love all calibers and try to find what bullet is its pet.
I am still attempting to get back the 35 whelen I sold approximately 5 years last time I ever sell a rifle:)
I was at Huntfest last weekend in Saskatoon Sask. drove two & half hours one way. If it would been in Regina it would have been worth it but I was a little disappointed with its content. Did talk with Remington rep and they make a CDL in 35 whelen but only right handed. If dI had them make a lefty it would cost me more that a custom job.
I will figure it out, Elk starts in 6 weeks:) and then I have Moose, Muley and Whitetail after that.
God always put you in right spot (Saskatchewan)
Thank you guys for all the suggestions.

Right now your best bet if you want a rifle in time for hunting season is the CVA Apex or a Handi Rifle. Both are offered in .35 Whelen right now, and I realize neither are a bolt actions but the will get you up and running real quick in a Whelen. Then your next best bet is to find a 7600 or semi auto Remmy in that caliber. I'm sure you could put together a LH Savage quick as well if you had to have a bolt right away. Other than that I can't think of anyone making a LH bolt action in the Whelen that isn't a custom shop option or going the full custom route.

Blessings,
....................Sask!...........I think that if any maker were going to intro a L/H 35 Whelen it would be Ruger. You may want to contact them to see if there are any near future plans for an M77 L/H 35 Whelen.

But if you want one in a L/H (bolt), it appears that you`ll either have to re-barrel another rifle or get a custom. The 35 Whelen is a dandy round!

There is always the .375 Ruger available in the LH African version. It`ll certainly do anything the Whelen can do and a little then some as well. With the right bullet, the 375 Ruger will shoot as flat as a 270 Win, flatter than the 30-06 or 35 Whelen, and hit alot harder than all three upon impact.

Hey! Just a little thought there!

Hi Big Squeeze, I have already own a 375 Mr. Holland & Mr Holland. Used it for everything for many years. Shot a 235 speers out of it and shot almost every game animal here in Saskatchewan. I am trying to get back to basics and I should have never let the 35 whelen I had go:).
I have made another pitch to see if I can get it back.
Thanks for all the info you guys are supplying me with.

Blessings,

Sask, you are going to love your Whelen! I couldn't be without mine. That and my 270WSM would be my last two rifles to leave me if it ever came down to it. Scotty

Hey Scotty isn't there a saying that great minds think a like or is it same calibers

Blessings,
