Well, I had a great weekend with my best friend. We have been friends for a long time. Brian was able to get him on his first deer this year, and the hook is set. He bought himself a 300WSM M70 EW, put Warne bases and Leupold PRW's on it, in order to hold a VX3 3.5x10 CDS. Very awesome combo... Just can't say enough good things about the rifle as a total package. I don't think you could do much better for the money.

Anyhow, we loaded up some test loads for rifle using the 165 AB. No particular reason behind the 165 AB, other than I had a ton of them on the rack, and I think it'll handle just about anything he will be hunting for awhile.

He also picked up a used Savage 243 with a VXII 3x9-50mm on it. Pretty bare rifle, black stock, blued finish. Anyhow, we loaded up some 95 BT's using 100V..

We used Hybrid 100V and IMR4350 for the 300WSM. I haven't ever messed with the 165's and didn't have any Superformance on the shelf, so I went with those two.

The rifle shot pretty nicely right outta the gates. Trigger was adjusted to 3.25 lbs and it felt really nice.

Anyhow, 67 grains of H100V went about 3120 with the 165 AB's and shot pretty decent. I really think it will continue to get better as it breaks in some, but it was very promising. It was a little bit of a learning curve as it was 32 out yesterday so extreme concentration on the cold trigger finger was a little rough!

66.5 worked decent as well

H100V worked EXCELLENT in the 243. Ran about 3050 with a 43gr charge and shot into a .490" group. What you guys don't realize is the trigger was really creepy on the Savage, but with alot of between shot dry firing, he was able to do really well with it.

I also let Shaun shoot a few rounds with my 338WM. He tossed the the first shot and put the other 4 into that ragged group with the 250 AB's. What a great load though. Runs right at 2700 and seems to be so consistent it is scary.

He also ran a few rounds through the Whelen with the 225 AB. He tossed one outta the group, but the recoil is a little more brisk from the Whelen than the 338. Pretty good shooting load though. Runs about 2750 or so and seems to be pretty nice. Short load work, again for the Whelen.

Got a little more work to do with the 264 and 140 BT's but I might switch up to another powder. These were 3 at around 3080. I could mess with it more, but I am about done with Retumbo. Rather try something else.

Shaun left the house with a list of stuff to collect, but for now, I have his loads in my log book so I can keep him in ammo till he gets up and running. Great time out on the range though. It was cold and snowy, but it was cool to see his face when he started shooting little groups.

Again, that 300WSM EW with the CDS is going to be a heckuva awesome set up for him I think. It is fairly light and seems to be very accurate. I imagine as the barrel continues to break in, it will only get better...

Awesome, Scotty! Always good to see a new guy get into it and have some immediate success. You did a good thing - except for skewing his viewpoint by putting him on that Coax press. He'll never learn to love a good single stage o-frame now!

Keep up the good work! He'll be a junkie soon enough!

I told him to spend his good money on a COAX. I have some of the smaller items like a scale and other items he could take till he wants to get better stuff. The COAX is worth the money to me and I like the way it works. Forster Dies and the COAX are a very nice combo. Trying to get him started out right and not have to respend money...

I believe he is hooked though.

That's awesome I like the single stage one's myself I have two one for depriming and sizing one for seating. Works great for me. I guess it might be different if I ever had an extra hand around make it go a lot faster. But after I prime I'm going as fast as the Green Giant will let me and I can't miss a beat or I'm behind.

Another Jarhead? What's this world coming to?

Good deal Scotty. Always good to add to the ranks of shooters, handloaders & hunters. Buncha nuts...

Apparently he already knows how to shoot pretty doggone well, which is exactly what I'd expect from him.

Shaun did a great job; I do believe the 300 WSM will be a shooter. And the .243 is no slouch. Those are some fine groups. Good to see you breaking him in correctly. Make him buy that Co-Ax, don't let him off the hook.

Scotty,

You are da man! Taking Suan under the wing to get him up and running is just flat out cool.
And it goes without saying, you Marines can shoot.

Job well done by both of you.

Thanks fellers, he is a good shooter for a Chief Warrant Officer

It was great to see how excited he was to get up and running. Should be fun when we can stretch his 300 out some with that CDS dial. I am thinking he has one of them rigs where you just don't wanna hunt with much else!

A 243, 300WSM and I am working on getting him a big bore lever rifle and he will be squared away. Well, he'll need a decent shotgun as well, but he has really started to get it together.

My wife has already warned his wife about the sickness...

There's nothing wrong until a medical professional claims it as a disease disorder right?

You forgot that he'll need a 22lr, and as for shotguns, he'll need an upland bird shotgun (28ga), a high altitude dove gun (20ga), a slug gun for deer (12ga) and a good home defense shotgun (12ga pump with pistol grip). It's not as easy as we all make it look, you know...

Nice job on the loading Scotty. I have some 100V on hand, maybe I should try that with the 180's in my son's EW in 300 WSM! Not bad shooting for a 243 Savage' (that's French- or at least what we told a sniper on our team! ) I think he is pretty well set and looks like he's more than lip-hooked, I think he swallowed the whole darn thing! 8)

I need to get some loaded and get out and shoot with it some more. His rifle is shooting well enough, I just need/want more velocity so I have to load some more darn it.........

You could have at least posted a picture of the rifle - scope combo! I meant to say the whole outfit by itself.

I come from a non-hunting/shooting family so I'm pretty passionate about "passing it on" like the non-family members who came along side me did back in the day.

There just isn't anything more satisfying ('cept when its your kids, I suppose) than getting a non-hunter stoked on shooting/reloading/hunting, is there???

Good job man! Another die-hard who won't soon be converted from our way of life!!!

Way to go, Marine! It's great to bring somebody new into the fold, and it adds one more pillar of common interest to the friendship. Well done.

Incidentally, 250 gr ABs are a hell of a way to introduce a guy to the .338, but he turned in one impressive group!

That's awesome! He's off to a good start with the 300 WSM! That setup with a 165gr AB will drop anything in North America.

Oh sure, what a swell friend! A friend's reloading bench is the Gateway Drug!!

Now he'll be spending his kid's college fund on presses, chronometers, bullets, powder, and trimmer pilots. Spending time away from his family in his dungeon. Reading loading books during family movie time.

Seriously tho...What a great day! That set-up should get him anywhere he wants to go on this continent. It is a good feeling to watch someone's face light up when they shoot their first tight group with their new rifle. Good deal.

With the brake on my 338WM, it is a baby to shoot. Plus, I wanted him to see what a good load looks like!

I have a feeling he will be head over heals before too long. With that 300WSM shooting the way it does, I get the feeling he is going to turn in some incredible groups as the rifle breaks in further.

That's what I am thinking too. I might have to try them in mine, just to see what I can do with em..

Wow that coax is an expesive unit. Are they really worth it? Great job on getting a new shooting in the bunch. When are you going to addict him to this sight?
