Well, I had a great weekend with my best friend. We have been friends for a long time. Brian was able to get him on his first deer this year, and the hook is set. He bought himself a 300WSM M70 EW, put Warne bases and Leupold PRW's on it, in order to hold a VX3 3.5x10 CDS. Very awesome combo... Just can't say enough good things about the rifle as a total package. I don't think you could do much better for the money.
Anyhow, we loaded up some test loads for rifle using the 165 AB. No particular reason behind the 165 AB, other than I had a ton of them on the rack, and I think it'll handle just about anything he will be hunting for awhile.
He also picked up a used Savage 243 with a VXII 3x9-50mm on it. Pretty bare rifle, black stock, blued finish. Anyhow, we loaded up some 95 BT's using 100V..
We used Hybrid 100V and IMR4350 for the 300WSM. I haven't ever messed with the 165's and didn't have any Superformance on the shelf, so I went with those two.
The rifle shot pretty nicely right outta the gates. Trigger was adjusted to 3.25 lbs and it felt really nice.
Anyhow, 67 grains of H100V went about 3120 with the 165 AB's and shot pretty decent. I really think it will continue to get better as it breaks in some, but it was very promising. It was a little bit of a learning curve as it was 32 out yesterday so extreme concentration on the cold trigger finger was a little rough!
66.5 worked decent as well
H100V worked EXCELLENT in the 243. Ran about 3050 with a 43gr charge and shot into a .490" group. What you guys don't realize is the trigger was really creepy on the Savage, but with alot of between shot dry firing, he was able to do really well with it.
I also let Shaun shoot a few rounds with my 338WM. He tossed the the first shot and put the other 4 into that ragged group with the 250 AB's. What a great load though. Runs right at 2700 and seems to be so consistent it is scary.
He also ran a few rounds through the Whelen with the 225 AB. He tossed one outta the group, but the recoil is a little more brisk from the Whelen than the 338. Pretty good shooting load though. Runs about 2750 or so and seems to be pretty nice. Short load work, again for the Whelen.
Got a little more work to do with the 264 and 140 BT's but I might switch up to another powder. These were 3 at around 3080. I could mess with it more, but I am about done with Retumbo. Rather try something else.
Shaun left the house with a list of stuff to collect, but for now, I have his loads in my log book so I can keep him in ammo till he gets up and running. Great time out on the range though. It was cold and snowy, but it was cool to see his face when he started shooting little groups.
Again, that 300WSM EW with the CDS is going to be a heckuva awesome set up for him I think. It is fairly light and seems to be very accurate. I imagine as the barrel continues to break in, it will only get better...
