hello,, im new here so please indulge me with your knowlege
my die is not seating off the ogive on the bullet ,, hornady 165gr (sp) interlock,, its seating about a 1/4" above, my comparator mesuers from the ogive ,, shouldnt the stem of the die press at that point also??? if the bullets are'nt the same length its seating at different deapths...

If your seating stem is not properly contacting the bullet, it won't seat as consistently nor as well aligned as it should. You might contact RCBS and discuss it with them. They may have an alternate seating stem for those bullets, or they may be able to machine you one for fairly cheap. Alternately, you could have a local machine shop attempt to profile the inside of the seating stem to fit your bullet of choice.

What kind of variation are you having? How have you determined the stem isn't properly fitting the bullet?

Romex2121, welcome to the forum. I'm certain that there are people here who will provide you with the answer you seek. Collectively, they represent a treasure trove of knowledge about hand loading, firearms and hunting.

However, your explanation is unclear to me. In order to clarify your concern, give us a little more information. First, do you have the correct comparator insert? Second, when you measure the OAL of your cartridge, is it consistent with what would normally be anticipated? How did you determine that the stem was not engaging at the olgive?

On many bullets, and especially on Hornady bullets, you will observe a ring on the gilding surface after seating the bullet. This ring dose not necessarily mark the olgive. If this is what you are seeing, the comparator will measure quite a bit further down on the shank of the bullet as it marks the olgive.

The comparator measures off the point on the ogive that is the diameter of the bore, the seater simply seats of a spot on the ogive and most seat no where near the point of full bore diameter.

You are right in suspecting the seater will not seat another bullet brand or style to the same lenght from the lands without being adjusted for it.
