Wanting to load some 130 gr Nosler Silvertips up for deer hunting, any one have any info on these? Will be shooting out of a Rem 700 and looking at using H4831SC. Thanks

60 gr of H4831cs or RL 22 should give you 3000+ fps and good accuracy. Old standby load from the Jack O'Connor days.

Thanks for the replies guys, I see in the Nosler book it starts out with 55 gr(h4831sc) as there most accuate load tested for this bullet(by them), by bumping that load up to the 59-61 gr do you still get some good accuracy?

Personally, I'm partial to the 140 Accubonds, but I wouldn't hesitate to hunt deer with a 130 ST.

In passing -- thanks for spelling Jack's name correctly. It is indeed spelled O'Connor, not O'Conner. (Alas, I notice that Nosler has misspelled his name here: http://www.noslerammunition.com/270WIN.html. He's a giant, a hero of mine and one who's memory deserves tons of respect. It's a little thing, perhaps even petty, but I hope Nosler corrects the spelling.)

My particular rem 700 270 doesn't shoot nosler bullets all that well. It shoots sierras and hornadys better for some stupid reason. However, the first bullet I wanted to shoot was the 150g BT for its weight and high BC. You might want to look at that bullet. It was giving 2-3" groups at 300 yards and shooting 2900fps with 57g H4831sc. The 130g will work great though out of a 270. Drop them deer like lightning! USually nosler is pretty spot on with there accuracy loads. Theres been very little times that my rifles/loads tested were not the same pattern of velocity/accuracy that nosler attained. Although, sometimes trying to get there velocities with there published amount of powder doens't work either.

In the 270 Win and 270 WSM I have found RL 22 to be excellent powder!

Good Vel and accuracy!

Only your particular 270 can answer this.

You a smart man, POP! May I also suggest Accurate's MagPro as a potential powder? See the following data for information, but MagPro has a burn rate that is pretty different than anything around it, and it really creates some spectacular velocity for certain calibers, among them the 270Win.

This should at least allow you to see some other options. Good luck with the shooting. If you are getting sub-par accuracy, (for me, less than 1.5" consistently at 100yds from any position for a hunting rifle) you can play with charge weight, seating depth, and such to find a better solution. You might also want to try the Lee Factory Crimp Die, available online for about $10. It really tightens groups in some rifles.

In my Rem 700 I've found that with the 130 gr bullet I can't get top velocity with H-4831 or Re-22. ( I don't like compressing loads) I get 3100 fps and good groups with H-4350. The best load I've found for my rifle is the 150 Nosler BT and Re-22.

Be sure to start at the low end of charge weights and work up. Not all rifle chambers/barrels are the same, nor is the capacity of the brass. One rifle might shoot 60 g. H-4831sc with no signs of pressure, with a specific selection of brass, bullet, seating depth, primer, etc. Another may show unsafe pressure signs with that load. As an example, my current .270 Win, maxes out at 59.5 g. H-4831. My previous .270 handled 60 g. with no indications of pressure. Start low and work up with your combination.

To answer your question about higher charges...My .270 shoots consistently in the .4" range, with what is a maximum load of H-4831 and 130g Balistic Tips.

I shoot 130 grain ballistic silvertips out of my ruger and get half inch groups at 100 yards using 48.0 grains of IMR 4350:grin:
