I'm looking at building a new rifle with the potential of two different donors..... My question is, is there an adveres affect of using a long action for a short action caliber ?
Even my hunting rifles will I very seldom put shells in the magazine so the thought of it ending up a single shot doesn't bother me.
Both actions are Rem 700's

With a long action, you can seat the bullets further out allowing for more case capacity. Not sure what caliber you are considering, but I would use the long action for a standard 30-06 family or mag case.

Have you considered a 280 AI?

JD,
You're going to hit me over the head for this, but one of the donors I'm looking at using for this would be my .280 or the model 7 .260

I'm looking @ the 6.5 X 47 Lapua real hard and exactly that... the longer action would certianly like those long little 6.5 projectiles seated out further.

( No worries... I have plans on replacing the .280.... just due time ) oh and $$$$ as always...

I took a long action up to my gunsmith and was thinking 284 or 280AI and I could seat the bullets out further for the 284. Long story short going to build another 280AI.

I've used these before

When I've done a short case on a long action I've always used a Davidson loading ramps to make it into a shingle shot but depending on what caliber may run into a feeding problem with a long action. That something you need to quiz your gunsmith on.

The 6.5x47 laupa case is just alittle shorter than a 22-250 case and a Rem short action will handle cases with OAL 2.800" + -. here is a reamer print on 6.5x47 and some OAL with different bullets.

Don't take this wrong but adding length to gain case capacity works but not on all calibers. There is enough loading data for the 6.5x47 Laupa now as to what works best.

I've got acouple more project then I'm going to have some new short action calibers and I'm looking hard at the 6/6.5x47 Laupa be a nice LR varmit rifle. Well good luck

I think where my issue arises is bullet selection...... I really like the 130's for the smaller 6.5 cases and right now plan on sticking with that. I guess I could use a 1 in 9 twist tube to ensure that I don't go with teh 140 / 142 gr match bullets out there.
The 130's should be fine in the short action from what I can tell. Jumpint to the 140 / 142 and seating them out to gain that case capacity, well then I think the long action may shine........ Just my thoughts at this point.
