Rifle Range fun today

I was kind of tuckered from all the cross-country skiing I've been doing lately, and I hadn't had my fun rifles out for a while. The only shooting I've been doing is practice with the work guns... So, with fairly warm weather and lots of melting snow at the range, I headed out:

Brought my chronograph, some targets, four favorite rifles and a couple of handguns. Had some fun and posted some results up in the Bullet Test section. Here's the short version:

From left to right: .308 Win/Rem 700, .375 H&H Number One, .25-06 Rem 700 and my all time favorite rifle the .22 Marlin 39A:

No bragging groups today. All my shooting was from standing or kneeling. Good practice, but no one-hole groups to post. Dang. Sure was fun though. Great way to spend part of my day, shooting some favorite rifles, at the range.

I did the same today. Recovered a 250 gr PT from the 338 RUM and a W-W Ranger 45 ACP 230 gr HP from the water jugs.

It was warm enough today. However, I managed to spend the day working. I do hope to be out this week, however, testing several loads. One hole groups are nice, Guy; they tell us something about the rifle. However, shooting from field position tells us about the shooter. I need to have time to do more of that.

I like range trips that are strictly fun shoots. Sometimes load development is too much like work. Pop a few reactive targets, shoot from different positions, play some games and shoot at the wagon wheel target.

Very different landscape you have there Guy. I could escape in those hills backpack camping/hunting for a few weeks, no problem.

Guy, that 39A looks like a peach. I've been hunting one of them down for awhile now with no luck. Did you buy yours new or used and at what price?

Thanks guys. CCC - this is along the Columbia River - quite a ravine. On the west side the Cascade Mountains rise way up, and on the east shore there's a steep rise to a big plateau. Out on the plateau it's mostly wheat farms for about 150 miles. Lots of wheat...

The Cascades are nice. Steep mountains, home to mule deer, elk, black bear, cougar, and now (oh joy) wolves too. Good fishing. Hunting isn't as good as it could be - I think there's simply too much pressure on the populations.

BRM - I bought Marlin used a few years ago for a couple of hundred bucks. Dad taught me to shoot with one back in the early 1960's and when I saw this one was avail, I snapped it up. My favorite rifle, hands down.

A fellow brought in a 39A some months ago. It wasn't feeding properly and required some work to get it cycling properly. It was ratty looking, the wood stripped of all finish with multiple dings and the bluing was absent. The rifle was handed to me along with several boxes of ammunition and I was asked to fire it to see what it would do at the range. I questioned why the fellow would spend the money on such a beat-up old rifle, and was told that it had belonged to his grandfather. Thus, he considered it a family heirloom. I knew that I would never keep such an ugly rifle hanging around my safe. Nevertheless, I took the rifle to the range along with the day's consignment for break-in. With several different ammunitions, that beat-up old rifle shot an honest 0.5 inches or better at 40 yards. I wonder if the fellow that owned it knew what a great rifle he had? One thing is certain, the fellow could make some money shooting for dollars against many of the new rimfires. All the 39As I've shot, shot well, but that one shone.

I am OUT of milk jugs for now! Doggone it. Gimme a few weeks, I want to try the 300 gr Nosler Partition for sake of comparison... :grin:

Am thinking I'm going to need more jugs next time...

Looks like a great time. I love that 308! I have been considering doing a marine sniper replica build sometime.

Thanks, I'm pretty fond of the ol' Green Machine myself. It's reminiscent of the USMC sniper rifles, but not the same. I'd like to have a true replica of the M40A1 sniper rifle myself. Or even the older, wood stocked version...

Pretty accurate replicas are avail, at a cost that hurts...

Pretty ugly day in San Diego today. Well, for San Diego, that is. Pretty windy, cold (again, for San Diego, high 50s) with an intermittent rain.

Not that I have any rifles down here. :evil:
