I understand that you don't want a .17 HMR, but... this is what the rifle is doing. Five shots at 50 yards from the bipod off that plastic picnic table.
If the .22 mag shoots that well, I'd think that would be satisfying... My son and I are certainly happy with his little CZ rifle!
CZ does make a fine rimfire rifle. I've had very good success with my Browning T-Bolt. I am very pleased with it.
Between the Savage and the Marlin, I am somewhat more impressed by the Savage. Perhaps it is the general reputation of their centrefire rifles, but I do like the Savage line. On the other hand, this past spring I shot an old Marlin 39A that had been brought in for service. It was really beat up and showed years of benign neglect. It shot a one-hole five shot group at 40 yards. Clearly, Marlin is capable of making a good rifle. The 983S is quite handsome.
My dad had one of the marlin bolt wood/blued in 22 mag for years, dont remember the exact model. It shot bout 1.25" at 100 yards and .5"-.75" at 50 yards.
He sold it and got a savage .17 HMR when that was the new thing.
He wishes he still had the 22 mag instead of the HMR now. The price of shells is what drives him nuts. Heck you can load a box of .223's for the price of those 17's. Cant kill anythign bigger then what you can stuff in your pocket with the 17 anyways...
Last summer a gentleman at the range let me shoot his new gun. A CZin .17 HMR with a Ziess conquest scope in the 14x range. 3 shots in 1 hole at 100 yards, and those are some small bullets. I'm not big on the 17's, but I wouldn't mind having one in either 22LR or .223, or both.
Those CZ's are nice! If you can get around the idea of a forgien built rifle they are hard to beat, I hear. Needed money and had to sell my Marlin 22 MAG. Regret it tremendously. That said it was no tack driver but there are lots of factors. Stevens line has a 22mag. A marlin or Savage is a tough choice but the heavy barreled Marlin is nice. An accu-trigger would be handy though. I cant decide....wish I had your problem. Let us know. The 22mag is WAY fun to shoot. CL
