scope ring size ?

That depends on the objective lens diameter of the scope, and your personal preference in how you hold the rifle. If it's a 32mm or smaller (such as the Vari-X II 2-7x28 I have on an old Browning) you can use low rings. If you're looking at a 40mm objective, I'd just about guess medium rings will almost always be the right choice. You can often make a 40mm scope work in low rings, but it usually requires some sacrifice in scope adjustment fore-and-aft in the rings, which may require you to crawl up the stock a bit. If you use much larger than 40-44mm, you'll almost invariably need a high set of rings. There are no hard and fast rules, and if you want to figure it out, you can do so with the scope and some clay blocks and a caliper, but if you're mounting a 40mm Leupold, get medium rings and you'll be fine about 99.999% of the time.
