As I read through many posts here on this great forum I see from time to time many like the .270Weatherby. I just wondered how many on this forum use/have the .270Weatheby Magnum?.

Most riflemen see their choice of rifle and caliber for the best, or else they wouldn´t have it ofcouse.

I see the .270Bee as the most versatile of all Weatherbys for hunting game up to 500ibs. Bullets weights from 100grain to 180grain doing up to 3500ft/ibs it gets so close the .300Winmag and it can offer almost as flat trajectory as the 7mmRum + it offers low recoil and it is not a geniune barrelburner. That´s why I choosed this caliber for my everyday(Denmark + Africa) hunting.

Every weatherby caliber out there I have used. The 270 Bee is my favorite of the "small bores"

In fact if I were limited to 2 rifles the 270 and 416 Bee are all I will ever need.

140 grain AccuBond and rl22 work for me.

I've done load workup on quite a few 270 bees. Were I to pick up a Weatherby, I'd surely consider the 270.

I know Jake has a M70 Classic Sporter like my 264 in a 270WBY.. That would be another 270 I wouldn't turn down were I to run across one.

I have the 270WSM and I know the WBY is just a little more of a great thing.

I like mine a lot! I have not got tha chance to shoot much with it, but I was sure impressed with how it handled some less than great shot placement on the one doe that I shot with it. I would ot think twice about taking it out for an elk hunt someday.

I'm shooting 7828 SSC with the 140 AB doing 3275 fps.

I totally love the 270 bee. I have had a pile of them, and whenever I sell or trade one in, another 270 bee is coming home with me. Moose, elk or whatever doesn't stay on its feet when properly applied. I've never had to whack something twice with it. It is a total howl shooting gophers with it too. It puts them 20' in the air, and smashes coyotes into pieces. Great cartridge.

It's no secret I absolutely love my 270Wby. I think if I were reduced to a single rifle, I'd keep only that one. It's just that good. I'm pretty confident I'd be able to take anything but the great bears and four of the Big Five with it. God willing, I'll never be without it.

I have a Ruger #1 B in 270 Bee it shoots as good as it looks! Can't wait to try the L/R NAB in 150gr!!

If I too should become exposed to every rifleman worst nightmare, and choose to make a choice of one rifle only, I would take the .270Bee. Mild in recoil...flexible in bulletweights for all purpose hunting.

Rigbymauser,
Any chance you've got a few more pics you could post of your pre-64 .270WBY? It's an absolutely beautiful rifle that I've enjoyed looking at lately. You guys make a pretty convincing argument for the round and have me thinking about my next project. With its velocity/trajectory, I could even convince myself that it could double as my coyote rifle! I guess the quest for more beat up pre-64 actions continues...

I am not the best camera man..:LOL. Somehow the pictures in photobucket is sharper than these pictures here??.

Thanks Joe.

Many fine rifles during the last 100 years has turned out to become immortal classics..the Pre-64 Winchester is one of them. I bought the rifle as a worn down Super Grade in .270Win. At that time I have some many other classics like .303Rigby, 300 H&H, 8x57, 400/350Rigby, 416Rigby, 333Jeffery and a 9,3x64Brenneke but none of them were a truly flat shooting raygun. I wanted a caliber that was light in recoil and just as flat as the .257Wea but had the potential of bigger game and yet, not the recoild of the .300RUM/Wea. I were looking hard at the .264Win and the 7mmRem which both at times were the planned caliber. Calibers like the 7mmRum/STW also became obtions as they are the flattest shooting
medium bored biggame calibers around. I was at this time no were near a "Weatherby" solution.
The "weatherby" solution came when looking at Lilja barrel homepage. I wanted the best of what I knew at that time. I studied Dan Liljas homepage and came across an artical regarding the .270Wea. I compared ballistics and saw the .270Wea was exactly the caliber I had wanted. More powerfull than the 7mmRem/WEA, just as flatshooting as the .257Wea, light recoil and get so close to 7mmSTW the difference becomes academical + it is not known to be a barrelburner. Bulletweights from 90grain to 180grain I knew I had something that fulfilled the one rifle dream for my purposes. 130grains bullets @3450ft/sec, 150graingrains @ 3280ft/sec, 180grain @3000ft/sec it can suit all my needs for plainsgame and mountains. The factory ammution can be bought here in Denmark + brass from Norma for reloading. Today I am very happy to have the best of two worlds in an american huntingrifle. Roy/ED Weatherbys first/favorit cartridge in the best boltaction rifle done on american soil.

I will here later in spring post pictures from range sessions done at 300meter(330yard) range.

Yeah, that is a sweet heart of a rifle. I wouldn't turn away a 270WBY in a Pre 64 either!

That is what my .270 Win Model 70 Super Grade was. The guy that had originally bought it in 1949, hunted with it for 33 years and then sold it to me in well used and worn condition in 1983. He had drilled and tapped four holes in the action rail for mounting an old Weaver side mount. Plus, he had worn and sanded the checkering on the Super grade stock until it was gone. Other than that, the rifle was in very fine condition. I had it restocked as you did yours Rigby Magnum. However, I left the rifle in .270 Win because it was a Super Grade.

I had Jules Bantchni in California crafted me a custom stock from a piece of Bastogne walnut that I had bought. London Guns TIG welded the action holes and recut the "Winchester" engraving that the mount holes had destroyed on the action Rail. I have deer hunted with this rifle since 1983 and have killed many deer with it. It is worn again now and shows all the years of hunting use but it still shoots sub MOA groups.

Rigbymauser,
Thank you for posting more pics of that rifle! It's gorgeous and hands down my favorite rifle on the entire forum, and heaven knows there are a lot of rifles on here that I like. Please entertain us with more pics of it on future adventures. With all of the merits of the .270WBY, I'm starting to think that I can't afford to not have one. As I recall, I believe you said it had a 27" 3 groove Lilja barrel on it. Can I ask you the contour you specified, where you found the wood and who did the amazing stock work for you? I hope you have many more great seasons and continued success with it.

Mine is coming on Monday. I can not wait!

Hey Joel.

The barrel is 27". The barrelcontour is done by Dan lilja who has this as a standard lineup in his business. I just ordered a .277Cal barrel with 1:10 twist duplicating the original pre-64 Win dimensions.
The wood is claro walnut. The outer lines was cut after the old original stock, but the shadowlines cheekpiece was done independently by the danish gunmaker.

Here is a picture of the rifle when I have had it for quite some time, but yet not knew of this rifle true potential. I had actually at this time thought of selling it to a friend of mine. The rifle had here at that time shot less than 50 shots.

I will hopefully again take it with to Africa this year
