Out at the range today - messing around with several rifles and several loads. When I got done messing with 'em, I un-cased the ol' Green Machine, wrapped the sling around my arm, went prone and set two, five-shot groups downrange at 300 yards.
Nothing new with the load or the rifle, just the same basic load I've been using for years:
165 gr Nosler Solid Base
46 gr Varget (max or near max, work up cautiously)
Lapua case, neck sized only
Fed 210 match primers
Rifle is a trued Rem 700 with a Krieger barrel, glass bedded in a McMillan stock. Once again the combo simply sent 'em in there, nice tight near MOA groups at 300 yards from prone w/no support other than the sling. Gotta love it when a plan comes together! This plan came together for me years ago and has remained virtually unchanged. Sometimes I substitute a match bullet, or a ballistic tip or a Partition, and sometimes I use Winchester cases, but otherwise things have remained the same for a long time now - always with good results.
I don't know if Nosler will re-introduce these Solid Base bullets or not. I liked 'em 20 years ago, and bought a bunch more when they were re-introduced a few years ago for a short run. Nosler builds good bullets.
Regards, Guy
