I have not yet received my new 35 Whelen and I think that I might order a second one and then calling it a day. I am thinking of the 270 WSM and I will be asking the young here in Regina to build it for me I have now seen 3 of his rifles and have seen what they are capable of doing. Jays is really making a name for himself. All 3 are shooting sub 1" at 100 yards and they are smooth. He told us yesterday that he feels that his rifles should should be .75 or better. I really like his attitude and he is a real nice young fellow.
I am thinking of using a 24" tube but have used 26" tubes in belted magnums. Okay guys lets have some advice which would you use?

Dan

Dan,

The 270 WSM is an excellent round. I'd say that is a good call. I would think a 24 inch tube is sufficient, especially with the newer powders. Most of the 270 WSMs I've shot have produced good accuracy; I wouldn't think that 0.75 inches would be difficult to achieve. Mine gives me 0.25 inch groups with 130 grain E-Tips. I know from experience thaT it is capable of taking moose, elk and whitetail.

As usual, I agree with Dr Mike, a 24 inch barrel will be plenty on a 270 WSM.

I hunted deer with mine this morning but had no luck. It is a stock Winchester Model 70 with a 24 inch barrel. My favorite loads in this gun shoot a 140 Nosler Partition at 3200 fps and a 110 grain Barnes Tipped TSX at 3600 fps.

While a 270 WSM might gain more from a long barrel than a 300 WSM (due to the expansion ratio), my 300 WSM rifle show darn little difference with 24 or 26 inch barrels. I own both and with my favorite load using the 168 TSX the longer barrel only gains about 40 fps.

Go with the 24 inch for the portability and weight, etc.

What powder are you guys running in the 270WSM the usual in 270 win is 4831 or 4350?

Blessings,
Dan

A 35 Whelen and 270 WSM would be a great combination to have. I like shorter barrels than some since we have so much heavy brush here so I would go for a 24" barrel and have a better handling gun.

Dan,

I'm using RL17 for my hunting load. I've used MagPro, but that is a tad difficult to find here in Canada.

+1 on the RL17, I've been trying to use this powder for the 270 and 300 WSM with great results so far on the 270. Just started on the 300 so not enough shooting yet but so far so good.

For my 270WSM, my favorite loads are:

W-W case
Fed 215M primer
67 grains IMR 4350
110 grains Barnes Tipped TSX

W-W case
Fed 215M
66 grains RL 22
140 grain Nosler Partition

Work up to these from below, probably maximum in most guns.

I just had a 270 WSM built, I went with a 25" because I couldn't decide on 24" or 26". I had it throated so that the COAL is around 2.940 at the lands.

I'll give it a propper into here this afternoon.

I agree with the 24" barrel would be easier to carry.

If it were me, I'd build a 7mmWSM. The heavier bullets available would be the difference maker between the .277 & .284.

Dan, I like how you think! I have both the Whelen and 270WSM and those two would be the LAST rifles I would give up.

I have a 24" barrel on my M70 270WSM. I don't think more will gain you as much as making sure you have adequate magazine room to seat your longer bullets like the 140gr AB, 150 PT and BT out to around 3 inches. The M70 allows this in my 7WSM and 270WSM. That helps a bunch with powder capacity. I'm able to run 150's at a scosh over 3100, 140's will go mid 3200's and 130's will go deeply into the 3300 range. Right now, RL22 is king in my rifle with IMR7828 and Magpro being great as well. I love the 270. The 7 is cool to, but I'd give it up first. I just like the 270. It is really alot of juice in a nice package. Scotty

So, does this mean that the 7mm WSM and the 264 WM are on the block?

Scotty, I know your passion for the 270WSM. That is one of the reasons I really want to try this caliber I really don't need it as I have 3- 270 win.
I think that right after The new year I will be ordering that 270 WSM. With the gun laws changing up here finally:)!!! I will be giving my sons their rifles:). Therefore I will have some room in the gun safe

Blessings,
Dan
