I just purchased a very nice used Tikka T3 in 300 WSM to go along with my Browning XBolt in 300WSM. My question is this: My Browning XBolt likes a jump of .1287 with Federal 175G TA's. What would your starting jump be for the Tikka? I was thinking .005 but anyone with a Tikka T3 in 300WSM please chime in. TIA

If your using the same bullet i would start with the same jump. The bullet has more to do with it then the rifle.

The two chambers will be different.
And...
The end of the bullet tip and cartridge overall length here mean absolutely nothing until the end.

What is your chamber OAL of the Browning?
Ogive to rifling...
of your Browning with that particular bullet.

Then measure the same bullet on your Tikka
Ogive to rifling.
Compare between the two

Do some math...

And seat it exactly the same distance away just as your Browning likes.

Odds are it will shoot similar but know this...
Using calipers for a total overall length and making it the same as the Browning is not actually going to be the same jump to the lands on the Tikka.

What tools are you using to get your acrual chamber length

I like to start out long , then I only have one way to go , that's shorter . I start out at the max length that my rifle allows . that length will be either the bullet touching the barrel lands , or the magazine box length . I'll find the length to touching the lands and go 0.010 shorter , and check to see if this length will fit the magazine . if it does fit , I start there . if it doesn't fit , I measure the magazine length and load 0.010 shorter and see if that length will feed ok . if it does I start there . if it won't feed , I go another 0.010 shorter , and see if it feeds . I keep doing this until it feeds, and start load development there . usually 0.010 - 0.020 shorter than the magazine box length feeds good .

Have you ever found a commercially produced weapon that the internal magazine is only .010 off from the chamber length?

I've been curious about this for some time.
Every rifle I have owned or helped with the magazine opening is always a great deal shorter than the ogive to land distance.
Most of these being Winchester 70's, Remington 700's, Browning A-bolt's and Ruger 77's

Curious about your findings

yes , I can reach the lands in a few of my factory rifles .
Same here, some Remington M700's.

The 700's I have are the closest but the magwell is still at least .020-.025 shorter than the max chamber length
The Winchesters are the furthest.
Two USRAC pre64 weapons and one USA made FN gun. The FN gun is closer but still a fair amount away from the chamber max length.
The New Haven guns are at least .100 or more difference. They enjoy a nice long chamber but it readers then a single shot if seated too long.

The above examples are all 300WSM weapons. Perhaps that has something to do with that 🤷

I'm referring to Remington 700 long/magnum length actions. I haven't seen it with short actions.

off the top of my head , my 7mm rem mag in a MKv weatherby , and my 7mm-08 Tikka 595 . both of these reach the lands and feed from the magazine .

edit to add ; with the bullets I'm shooting out of them . 160 AccuBond in the 7 rem mag , Hornady 139 BTSP in the 7mm-08 . I'm can see some of these long sleek VLD type bullets not fitting the mag box at touching the lands
