I doubt the industry guys will let the figures out - but it would be interesting to know what percentage of bullets sold are target/match bullets vs how many hunting bullets are sold...
I believe there are far more hunters than competition shooters - but how many hunting bullets does a hunter buy in a year?
Varmint shooters buy a whole mess of bullets - but what about your typical deer hunter?
Not nearly as many competition shooters - guys who actively compete in NRA highpower matches or benchrest or whatever discipline - but they tend to shoot a lot... Most of my highpower shooting buddies tell me they go through somewhere between 1000 - 5000 rounds of handloaded match ammo every year, year after year.
The hot-dog pistol competitors don't seem to have any problem going through 20,000+ rounds per year. Even more casual pistol shooters like me go through a few thousand rounds a year - all target type ammo - not hunting ammo.
Just curious what the figures might be between say .30 caliber competition bullet sales and .30 caliber hunting bullet sales...
For instance - I'll shoot 1000+ 155 grain Nosler competition bullets this year through my .308 Win, but I doubt that I'll shoot more than 100 rounds of 180 grain Nosler Partitions through my .300 WSM... Those boxes of Partition bullets tend to last for several years on my loading bench - particularly once I've got my "standard" load for a hunting rifle figured out.
