The clowns in St Paul are at it again...response from my Rep

Thomas Jefferson as correct, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

I couldn't stand to watch that today. I knew what was it going be before it happened as we all know the BS propaganda. I did spend 4-5 hours last Fri. calling the proposed Gun Bill Committee Members that will decide whether it comes to the floor however. I was shocked at the Party balance of the Committee on the list. Don't remember the numbers totally, but felt out numbered roughly at 70/30 iirc.
I got the gist of a couple of the DFL'rs aren't so liberal to be against the Second Amendment, but it's still an uphill battle here MN. How this is such a Blue State, still amazes me. The Twin Cities, I can see, but the rest confounds me.

The sound bites on the news today from the house chamber make me want to throw up. Dumb misguided, self rightous souls are giving away my right to govern myself and the publc goes along w/ it hook line and sinker. Its like saying that refrigerators are responsible for me being 20 pounds over weight.... CL

Me also Dave, I never could understand why Minnesota was so Liberal! I think it my be the Scandanavian influence? They gave up their rights and got taxed to death in Europe without a fight as well and they are happy with socialism. There is some of that here in Washington as well, the old Scandanavian Northwest Liberalism on the coast.

Sorry to post this as an e-mail thread, but thought you might be interested in the response from my representative. IT is a reply which is more than I got from my other rep. but it smacks of "form letter" and political double talk IMHO. What do you think? CL

Dear (CL):

Thank you for contacting me about the regulation of firearms. I appreciate that you took the time to share your perspective.

You have raised an important issue. The tragic deaths of twenty first graders have some policymakers in Minnesota and in the United States Capitol asking whether changes in laws affecting mental health treatment or gun use and gun ownership would be appropriate. The conversation has just begun at the State Capitol in St. Paul. Several bills related to this issue have been introduced. It is important that all proposals are discussed thoroughly, and that public input is gathered.

Our democracy depends upon informed and engaged citizens engaging in the process of communicating with elected officials and sharing information and opinions.

As part of that process, the House of Representative?s Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee is reviewing a variety of mental health and firearm-related measures, with the ultimate goal of adopting an ?Omnibus Gun Violence Prevention? bill. Among the topics under consideration include background checks, mental health screening, authorizing school teachers and administrators to carry firearms, restrictions on the ownership of certain hardware (assault rifles, large capacity magazines), or increasing criminal sanctions in certain circumstances for carrying a weapon on school property. Other proposals may be introduced and discussed as well.

You may have also heard about the initiative Governor Dayton included in his proposed budget to reinstate the Minnesota School Safety Center (MnSSC). MnSSC will provide emergency preparedness, training, planning assistance and other services to schools, law enforcement, and community partners in an effort to improve school safety. This office was closed down after its federal funding ran out. Governor Dayton?s proposed budget allocates $1 million in state funds for its operation. It is my understanding that re-establishing the Center is a goal of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association.

In addition, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and other top law enforcement officials recently held a press conference here at the Capitol to urge the Legislature to address shortcomings in Minnesota?s background check and mental health systems. They advocated for, among other things, giving law enforcement easier access to critical mental health court records (records that are already public, but which law enforcement currently has difficulty obtaining quickly when needed).

Of course, the key to addressing the problem of gun violence is determining whether any of the proposals under consideration would, if enacted into law, make residents of Minnesota safer. It is unclear at this point in time whether any proposals under consideration have sufficient legislative support to get voted out of committee, or to get voted off the House and Senate floors and signed into law by the Governor.

At this point, the Public Safety Committee in the Minnesota House of Representatives is reviewing the proposals that have been introduced to determine whether any of them would keep people more safe and would properly insure the constitutional rights of gun owners. I am pleased you took the time to contact me to share your thoughts. I am listening to all of the residents of my district. A discussion surrounding this issue will continue in the days ahead. If a bill on this topic gets voted out of the Public Safety Committee, I will consider what is in the best interest of our state?both in the short and long-term, and I will give substantial weight to the input I receive from the residents of our legislative district.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I value your input.

Sincerely,

Melissa Hortman

Thanks for your email. Because of the volume of email I receive, I prioritize responding to the residents of my own legislative district.

If you live in my legislative district, please simply reply to this email with your street address so that I can place your email above those I receive from outside my legislative district. Thank you.

If you are uncertain about who your current state representative is, I encourage you to use a tool at the Minnesota Secretary of State's website to find your House District number and to use that information to contact your State Representative. Here is the link: http://pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us/ For a list of members by legislative district, go to www.house.mn. With redistricting in 2012, many changes have been made.

Thank you for taking the time to contact my office. Informed, active and engaged citizens are key to the survival of our democracy.

Sincerely,

Melissa Hortman

Honorable representative Hortman- As a resident of your district I am writing to ask that you do not support in any way or vote for pending changes in firearm laws or regulations at this time. Spefically the provisions found in Mn HF- 237,HF 238, HF239,Hf240, HF241, HF242,HF243, HF244. Unfortunately, we live in a world where evil and trajedy will always be a part of life. Also unfortunately, efforts to legislate ethics and morals that would prevent recent and historic trajedies and loss of life will not be successful. History is repleat with examples of failed efforts. Education, expectations for positive behavior, and opportunities to make a positive impact are the only way to combat these evils. As a father and an educator and a 26 year employee in the human services field those responnsibilities fall to me, not my government! Please do not alllow my rights and responsibilities to be removed or decided by my government. Thank you for your consideration and service.

She is my rep as well and the response letter is the same as yours; word for word. I sent a follow-up, so it will be interesting to see if she responds back with something different.

A bill supporting universal background checks will be sent to the house floor in Minnesota for debate... here we go. I am prevented from further comment at this time by the fact that this a "family show".     :x :x The thing that makes me the most digusted is that the story was accompanied by footage of the "big bad black guns"..... :x  CL

We will see.

I can not believe Colorado bit the dust.
