I picked up two Win M70's in 300RUM last year for the purpose of building a 338Rum or edge to play with the then new 300grNAB. One is a "Classic" in polished blue and wood and is really a looker. It shoots .75MOA with 180BTs and 200NABs and I haven't even bedded it! Can't wait to try the 210gr LRNAB. I don't think I'm going to touch that one but the other is matte finished in a tupperware stock that has been hunted hard. Here is my decision - go ahead with the 338(?) Tactical/long range build or perhaps do something else with this "magnum" length action. The introduction of the new LR NABs has me thinking about the 7mmRUM with a 28" barrel.....or 375Rum DG rifle or....? A 375Bee might be a good fit. What would you do?

You managed to grab a couple of reasonably rare chamberings, Scott. I surely concur with you on keeping the one as is. That is shooting just fine. As to a build, I'm getting so old that I find myself shying away from the big boys any more. Still, a 7RUM would be intriguing. The 375 Bee would be something that even I could appreciate. Great options for you.

I think I would leave it for now and try the new AB LR bullets when they come out.

YUP!

My RUM M70 will become a .404 Jeffery, assuming it's not a casualty of divorce.

You know, I had a .338 Edge and thought it would be great for long range and it was, but honestly my .300 win. mag. kept right up with it and actually out performed it most of the time (My .300 was also put together by a much better smith than the .338 and had better components; so keep that in mind) I no longer have the Edge. I probably wouldn't build or buy another .338 for LR, unless I'm planning of shooting 1,500+ or just got the hankering for more horsepower. But my latest advancements with my .300 win. mag. have really impressed me. I am getting 1/2 MOA or better with the 215 Hybrid and and pushing them at 2,950fps out of my 28" Hart with a grain less powder than the 210 VLD's and getting more velocity! The 210's clocked in at 2,940fps. And with the 215's BC of 0.696, it does very well at long range, and I really don't feel I'd gain much stepping up to a .338 for my wants/needs/purposes.

Please don't take that as I'm trying to talk you out of building a .338 or anything larger than .30 cal, I am not trying to do that. I'm simply trying to give you some things to consider. Also, you've already what sounds to be a great long range .30 caliber and have components for another big boomer so I completely understand the want to build something bigger. If it wasn't for the oddball head diameter (0.588") of the .338 Norma, I'd vote for building one of those. It's a very good cartridge from what I've read and will feed well out of a standard long action, everything I've read about is positive. You may look into it. If you don't want to modify your bolt face, a .338 RUM would be my choice. Personally, I don't think the gains you get out of an Edge are worth it. You don't gain much in velocity, it's more work to reload for and you ware out primer pockets really fast (that's my biggest complaint).

That's my 0.02 though. I'm eager to hear what you end up building and hope it works out well for you.

Keep us posted!

I have a few big bores, but I'm with DrMike on the 7 SAUM. It only gives up a couple hundred feet to the STW, and is a lot better to shoot. Get a short stiff barrel, and a moderate weight. Twist for the bullet of choice.

Thanks for the replies guys! My thoughts pretty much go along with yours. I'll let this one sit for a while. I'll run the LR ABs in my 300Rum and 280AI and see if they work for me. I like the 7RUM idea especially if I stick to a twist rate for the heavies (160-180gr).
Kurt - very cool idea about the 404; the grand Daddy of them all! It would make one heck of a DG rifle. Can you still get brass for that one?
Scott

I am with Kurt, something like a 404 or 470 Capstick would be pretty awesome on that beat up M70.. I have the same deal going on, since I have my old 338 waiting on a barrel. Just not sure what to barrel it with yet.

I dig it. If I had a Magnum M70, that would be pretty high on my want list....
