Townsend Whelen’s Best Cartridges List

The saying "Varity is the spice of life" applies to rifles, reloading and hunting I believe. We all have our favorites as Col Whelen did and like using different ones as we do. It's been fun and interesting to be able to use different ones over the years seeing how different calibers, bullets perform on deer and such. If I would be pressed to owning, using one it would be a 30-06 or 270Win just because I have more time associated with them. Certainly nothing wrong with the others.

Best-All-Around 30-06 Springfield
Best Whitetail Deer 270 Win
Best Mule Deer .264 Win Mag
Best Elk 300 Win Mag
Best Moose 300 H&H Mag
Best Grizzly/ BB 340 Weatherby Mag
Best Black Bear 30-06
Best Antelope 6mm Rem.
Best Sheep/ MG 6mm Rem.
Best Caribou .264 Win Mag

Some of these I have never Hunted but as you can see I lean towards flat shooting Cartridges. The thing that is wrong with my list is you need to be a Reloader. I have always said for people who do not Reload need to buy what is the most popular .243 Win, 270 Win, 7mm REM Mag, 30-06, 300 Win Mag.
I agree that the need for Magnum is really not needed even though that is what I have carried for the last 40 years.
My list is biased as that is what I have and used for a three rifle battery for Big Game. 6mm REM. .264 Win Mag, 300 H&H Mag. While I have never hunted Brown Bear I would do it in a Heartbeat with my 300 H&H Mag and a well made 200gr Bullet
