I have never traded a rifle and want to make sure I don't get hosed in the future. I am looking for a Rem pump action in 270/30-06 to have bored out to 35 Whelen or a big bore Marlin lever. I have a Browning lever .22, BPS turkey gun and a CVA .50 muzzle loader. When trading with a local store I am guessing they will want to offer way less, but how low should a guy go? The BPS is going for $650-550 on Gunbroker and the .22 is going for around the $500 mark. I am guessing the ML is worth maybe $200 with all the gear I have to shoot it. Would it be worth trying to trade for a Rem pump or Marlin lever? Any tips to offer when working out a trade?

...sorry to say it, WT, but most shops are going to look up the book value on a trade-in, subtract a percentage for a profit margin on their offer. Don't be surprised or upset if they offer you considerably less then you expected. Most good shops will give you a reasonable value against a new gun, figuring they are going to get their mark up on the new one & turn over the trade-in for a little profit, but there's always going to be the shop who wants to screw you on the trade-in & the next guy who buys it. Talk to the shop, see if they do trade consignments, what they'll offer you, etc. Decide what you have to have on a trade, if they can't do it, no harm no foul, just don't make the deal...

...honestly, I wouldn't trade the BLR or BPS for a 760/ 7600, I'd just cruise the shops & shows till one that you like shows up, you'ld probably save quite a bit...

WT, Wildgene is telling you the way it is. I would attempt to sell your rifles & then see what comes up for sell.

Blessings,
Dan

Yeah, trading with a local gun shop has never worked out well for me. I would think you could sell some of what you have in order to make a deal. They are in the business of making money, so offereing top dollar doesn't give them much of a profit margin either.

I would think if your guns are going for that much on GB, you get yourself an account, sell them and then go find exactly what you want.

That's a nice one Dewey. If the price doesn't jump up too much that would be a good'un.

It's located at the Hunters Den in Waynesboro PA. That shop happens to be one of my resources for reloading supplies.
Interesting. I spent plenty of time at the Chambersburg Hospital, which isn't too far away.
Except, it was almost 20 years ago. That seems far away.

I also have not faired well with trading firearms either. I did it when I was young and did not have cash but it never seemed to go my way?

If you look around you can find a 7600 in a 35 Whelen pretty reasonable. If it were me I would sell one or more of the guns you listed and buy a 7600, it's easier and you'll fair much better in the long run.

If it were me I'd keep what I had and save for the 7600.
There will come a time you'll want what you've traded or sold.

Put the guns up for sale here, as well as 24hourcampfire and gun broker. Start looking for a 35 Whelen and a Marlin 1895 45-70.

One of these days I will post them for sale here. I am not a member of 24hourcampfire or gun broker so I will have to look into becoming a member.
