Was fortunate to get a draw for elk and will be heading out from Dec 25th to the 28th.

Decided to go with my Mk V Euromark in 7mm. Scope is a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 in Warne Maxima rings and bases.

Now, down to the nitty gritty....what bullet to use.
I have 160 AB, 160 PT, 139 GMX and 175 GS

Thinking of loading up the 160's with RL25 and seeing which the rifle likes. Seems like a perfect elk bullet weight. Opinions?

You won't go wrong with any of the 160s or the 175. While the 139 g. GMX will work, I do like a little more mass. I've personally used the 160 g PT and the 175 g GS to good effect on moose and elk. I have no doubt about the 160 g AB working just as well. Congratulations on getting this draw; and I'm pulling for you to connect.

Our elk crew ( 6) use three 7mm mags. The 7mm guys run 160 gr. AccuBond in two rifles, 160 gr. Partition in the other. Prior to the AccuBond they all used 160 gr. Partition. Two of the guys are honest 50 percent success elk hunters over the last 20 years, the FNG, killed his first bull this year.
They have killed elk from about 40 feet to 450 yards. No bullet failures, no lost elk. A few managed to stay on their feet long enough to get hit again. A few wandered a short distance before succumbing, Only one required extensive tracking due to poor bullet placement.
I've never shot anything but paper with a 7mm, but from what I've witnessed you'll be well served with the 160 grain bullets.
Have fun, good luck
Don

...I've shot a few elk w/ 160's, I've shot a lot of elk (20+) w/ 175gr. GrandSlams, they do just exactly what they're supposed to do...

Which one is the rifle currently sighted-in with?

They'll all do the job. I'd favor the 160's & 175's.

Looks like its time for me to round up some recovered bullets and take a pick.. I have used 3 of those bullets on moose. 160PT, 160AB, 139GMX. All worked about equally but I have a soft spot for the PT it just works time after time with no guess work..
Where are you drawn ? And do you plan on entering the suffield cull draw on the 5? I'm debating.
Side note I got a call from the Boss( my ol man) they have to go to Calgary for Xmas and he doesn't feel like packing his ol faithful and ammo for his cow draw into the city and then here. So I was told to get a load worked up with 100 gr PTs and the 6 mm rem he bought my son when he was born. So his plan is to use the 6. On his elk. I guess we'll see if we can get one tracked down.

L toR: 139 gmx-160Ab-160pt both pics.
You can see very similar sized mushroom .
All were recovered on off side under hide.
The gmx while lighter retains more weight and
Leaves the muzzle in my case about 200 fps faster.
I like them all, but the PT is my fav..
Good luck on the hunt.

That will work!! (y) Try and get us some pictures after your hunt and maybe a recovered 100 gr. Partition to show off!

boomer I think you should go with the 160 gr. Partition, it's like milk and honey!

Glad you got drawn of Elk. I load for 3-7mm mags all use 160gr. Accubonds and before the Accubonds they shot 160gr. PTs. These particular bullets have accounted for many Deer, Elk & Moose over the years.
The powder I use under them is IMR4350 and it give speed of around 3,000fps and very good accuracy.
Looking forward to a good Elk hunting story with photos I hope !

Blessings,
Dan

I believe that the 160 grain PT or AB (in that order) are THE bullet in a 7mm Mag.

I have shot two deer with this load and saw firsthand a cow elk drop to one shot from the same load.

Velocity isn't as high but on an elk these are great bullets!

I killed my first bull back in the early 80's with the 7mm mag. using old style 175 gr. Grand Slams. I actually took 2 out of the same box. No complaints.
But if I took my 7mm today in lieu of my .300 I think I would use 160 gr. Accubonds or PT's, depending on accuracy. Nothing lighter for sure.

Good luck on the hunt.

We got drawn down to the far south of Alberta. I am planning on putting in for the suffield draw. Might as well.

The rifle really likes the 139GMX factory load. Not sure if I can duplicate with handloads.

There is nothing wrong with those GMX 139gr in a factory load. Place that bullet in the boiler room and there will be Elk in the freezer.
Looking forward to the story with photos.

Blessings,
Dan

I am going to put together some loads and see how they shoot this weekend. RL25 with the 160AB and 160PT and also some loads with the 139GMX with RL22.

I think the 160 PT was created then the Lord created elk to kill with them... They are danged awesome bullets in a 7mm Magnum. I run the AB's in my 7WSM because they have been very accurate for me, but I really like the PT a bunch.

As the others said, with that big Weatherby, I'd think you'd get into the 3150-3200 range with RL25 and a 160. That is some serious elk medicine if you ask me. Scotty

The 160 gr PT or AB would be my pick and I would use the one that shoots the best.

Got out to the range today and seems my rifle likes the AccuBond over the Partitions. The 139 GMX shot very well as usual.

The champ seems to be 76grs RL25 and the 160AB.
