He's a champion level shooter. The books and discs he sells have the position shooting and sling shooting stuff as clearly shown as I've ever seen.

His work is oriented at the CMP/NRA rifle competitor, but is DIRECTLY applicable to the hunter. After all, the positions and the sling were originally intended for the infantryman in combat. It doesn't get any tougher, faster, or more real than that.

I don't mind plugging for the Top at all. He knows what he's doing.

Absolutely correct, I'm convinced I have made most of my bests shots on game using a proper sling. Thanks for getting this information out Guy.

Having used a Ching Sling in the past I'm considering using a proper military rifle sling. I like the support the Ching Sling gives but don't desire a third swivel stud in my stock. Not convinced about the Rhodesian Sling yet.

I am a huge fan of the military sling. I had a moment last year and thought to myself, I need to get back to basics. The Marine Corps taught me to shoot using a loop sling. Never dawned on me that a plain old Turner sling could be so useful.. Once I got comfortable, I got my son on it as well.

Like Guy mentioned, the open leg sitting is a little more conducive for me and hunting..

But man, prone, feels like a darned bench when your snugged up tight..

Throw a pack under the front end with a sling... WOW, now you have a super stable shoot from.

Have at it, it is ALOT of fun and will make you a much better rifleman in the field.

Mucho gracias Senor Scott.

Great pics and write up that helps to explain a lot. In my research of the Turner sling the YouTube videos show that the loop is cinched down tight above the bicep. It appears that your arm loop is not cinched tight. Do you do this for more expediency in the field or for some other reason?

By the way I'm in need of a mule and you look young and fit. Want to go moose hunting? [emoji2] All in jest mi amigo, all in jest.

Vince, yup the loop should be pulled up tight against the bicep. If you have the time to set it up, then I would do it. Keeps the sling from moving.

I found another trick I learned from friends is once you get a Turner, or any other good leather sling, you should hang it with a 5-10lb weight, lathered in Obenaufs or other leather treatment conditioner.

And I just realized, the pictures of my son shooting are with a Montana sling using the hasty sling set up. Still works well, but nowhere near as rock solid as the loop in my opinion.

Thank you mate.
I'll have to give it a go.

You'll be glad you did.. It's fun and doubles as a carrying strap when you aren't killing stuff!

I've never used a sling for any kind of shooting . the only reason I have a sling is to help getting in and out of a tree stand , or when I'm dragging out an animal . if I hunted off the ground I wouldn't have a sling on my rifle . I'm always trying to learn something new to better myself . I really appreciate this info and the pics . I'll be buying a different type of sling and trying these shooting methods . trying to get solid without a bench or bipod can be a real challenge for me . thanks for the pics and info , it's greatly appreciated . any more advice you can share with a total beginner is welcome .

I have no cobra slings precisely because I want to use the sling if the shot dictates.

My primary hunting rifle wears a well broken in military M1907 courtesy of the local American Legion. They got some new ones and sold the old ones for a fundraiser. Nothing like well broken in leather (with new keepers, they are a vital component). My NM rifle is waiting for the new Turner "biothane" sling to arrive. Has pretty good reviews from experienced shooters, we'll see.

Scotty, I'm glad to see you turned around..... that Bear was getting way too close to you for my comfort! Not the biggest bear in the house, but he sure was smart thinking he'd hold a Welcome sign to lure you in! lol

Ok, call me the class clown, but nice work showing us the proper use of a military sling there buddy..... Man, that 35 Newton looks good!

I still have mine and use it from when I was a kid, 1 1/4" saddle leather and brass hardware from Boyt. It's nice and flexible from years of use so it doesn't dig into my skin.

That bear is pretty danged sneaky! HA!

Jim, the best thing I can do is point you to Brownells or Turner's and order one of their slings, with swivels on it. Turners are the nicest with the Grovetec swivels, since they are made of steel and fairly bullet proof. Also, get a jar of leather conditioner, really helps with breaking them in.

I will say if your hunting with a pack and good sling, you have a mobile bench rest.

All this talk about shooting has me ready to hit the range for some more shooting. Been awhile and I should be out there practicing. I had great results and was able to hold MOA or better out to 500 with the hunting rifles before I left for the elk hunt. Might take a little while to get snapped back in, but it's there..

Oh another thing, I actually bedded my front stud (just put some bedding on the threads and ran it in). I hated when the sling got twisted, so I made sure they won't do that anymore.

Thanks for the info ,Scotty . man I'm getting anxious too . I think I'll have some time this summer to get back into shooting on a regular schedule . trying to learn to use a sling will just give me another push to get to the range more often . I've been making loads up for my 300 wby , hopefully it will like one . going to start doing the same for my lapua . it's looking like a fun summer already .

I wore out the front stud hole on my one stock, from using a bipod . I bought one of these to fix my striped hole , it worked out great . so if you ever strip one this seems to be a good fix .

Nice! That stud looks beefy Jim.

I'll be watching your load work for your 300 Wby. What bullet are you looking at running. I have some 210 ABLR's waiting for the range. Might get a shot at them in the next couple of weeks.

I went with the 200 gr partitions . I did a lot of figuring with magazine box length and bullet length . the 200 Partition looks like a good fit in my mag box , and also with the B&C reticle in my scope . my test loads are using RL33 . I was using the 180 A bond , and it's actually longer than the 200 part . I'm really interested in your work with the 210 ABLR's , they are long suckers .

the bullet lengths I was figuring with .

part 180 gr oal is 1.256
A- bond 180 gr oal is 1.380
part 200gr oal is 1.350
ABLR 210 oal is 1.550

The 200 PT is my fall back if the 210's don't act right. RL33 is what I plan on trying as well.

Scotty did you know you had a black bear about ready to eat you in that one photo?

Seriously great pics that show how to use the sling.
