I was wondering if any of you lads know if I can get a factory 6.5 X 284 in a lefty model? I would like it with a 24" barrel and a 26" would be better.
This caliber has really got a hold of me,I might give up on my 270 wins (not likely) but I sure would like to tinker with this caliber

6.5-284
Here might be two places to try. They are semi-custom and both places build really nice rifles. The Cooper Arms business makes their own actions and is unique to this company. I have not shot one of their rifles, but a friend at work just had one built in a .280 Remington. He is just breaking it in so I have no report. He says it is beautiful though.

The Montana Rifle Company make their own actions and use the best parts of the Mauser 98 and the Model 70 actions. I have heard nothing but good things from them as well. You could pull each of these sites up on the internet and take a peak. I think you will be drooling. If it were me, I think I would lean towards the Montana Rifle Company just because it is the best of the Model 70 and Mauser's combined. Hope this helps!!

Sask Boy,

You may also want to contact Desert Fox through here. I just completed a build on a beautiful 6.5 X 284.

That is a great round and easy to build off of due to the case head specs being common @ .473
Any of the left hand actions you could find with the std. .308 S/A or for the real potential of the cartridge the -06 std actions to build on.

Depending on what you plan on doing with the rifle, don't over look the 6.5 X 47 Lapua - Close to the same ballistics with much less powder.

Keep us posted which direction you look at going.

I thought I had heard Savage was gonna be building 6.5x284 this year?
Could be I heard wrong but.................

Couldnt you buy a Savage or Stevens action and an aftermarket barrel chambered in the 6.5 and put er together yourself?

There is that Savage Hot Rod shoppe you could look at. Sharpshooters supply or similar name.

Dan,

We've built several that I've shot over here at RMR (http://rockymountainrifles.com/) that I've been privileged to shoot. All have shot quite well, indeed. One of the smiths that does a lot of 1000 yard shoots just finished one this winter. His initial reports are very positive.

Dan, I can't blame you. Powerstroke was right about the .473 bolt face. Savage probably is the only option for a factory lefty, but if you can find a lefty donor action with .473 boltface, you can then have it rebarreled to a 6.5 - 284.

Your 270 might be a good candidate for rebarrel.

I was at the gun shop and I spoke to the young gunsmith there. He advised that we could build a 6.5 X 284 for no more than $2000.00 Canadian hey. He advised that they would guarantee 1/2" moa.
He advised that a 26" barrel would be $400.00 the action would be around 400.00 and the stock would be the same.
He advised that I should decide from one of three stocks McMillan, H-S or a Hogue.
I heard of the McMillan and the H-S but not the Hogue.
I thought we would all build this together and then I would shoot it
Jays (Gunsmith) advised that all three stocks are good and are aluminum bedded and I could just choose. Okay guys this is where is starts I need opinions on which stock?

Dan

yup!

sask boy, If you're gonna go that route, forget the Hogue stock. It's not even in the same league as HS or McMillan. It's rubberized on the outside so it will catch on your hunting jacket. They do come with alluminum bedding block and pillars but, again it isn't an HS or Mcmiillan. Another great stock option would be the Bell and Carlson Medalist. As mentioned, you would get just as much or probably more bang for your buck by going with a Savage action and getting a custom barrel and stock. You could get the action trued up and tricked out and also get trigger work done by SSS, Sharp Shooter Supply. Check them out.

Pop if I did it that way I think that I would need to much guidance.
And besides that it is almost impossible get those items shipped to Canada.
I can not even buy a scope and get it here because of the Homeland Security Act.

Blessings,
Dan

Well, you might try calling the Savage custom shop, as they build all sorts of neat stuff, especially for POP. If they have the reamer, they can make a southpaw rifle in whatever caliber, and stock it however you want (within their stock choices). It would then be a factory supplied rifle, and should be zero problem to go down the your selected Savage dealer and pick it up, I'm guessing.

Savage makes the 111 Long range hunter in a 6.5-284 Norma 26" barrel, "on/off" break, adjustable stock, and fluted barrel.

Looks kinda cool! Might be cheaper than building one if you don't already have an action. Just a thought.

May understanding is that the 111 only comes right handed.

Thanks guys Blessings,
Dan

Sask Boy,

The type of stock you want/need is highly dependant on what kind of shooting you want to do with it? Do you want to carry it in the Field or shoot it from the bench, etc..

If your looking to start with a decent stock and be a little more frugal out of the gate. I would suggest, provided you go with the Savage build, you can commonly find their factory laminate stocks used at a very resonable price in both the heavier bench config or the field config... Lot of different plastic/glass stocks out their but with a laminate you do get rock solid..

Gosh I would think you could assemble a "custom" savage for alot less than 2K....
