Well I actually drew an antlerless elk tag for the state of Washington. Kind of excited it was my first pick too. How has anyone else done in Washington?

Corey

Sad to say I didn't draw anything. With zero points, I wasn't very hopeful. I'll cross my fingers things work out for high buck. Thanks for the heads up that the results were out.

Congrats Corey!

My son and I both struck out, again. Sigh... That's okay, we're planning on a good general season hunt.

Best of luck on your elk hunt!

Guy

Congratulations, Corey. That sounds great. Guy and Joe, I hate to hear you got goose eggs. Here's to general season for you both.

There are "easier" tags to put in for - but I REALLY want to hold out for a "quality buck" tag, so I can hunt mule deer bucks in the rut, in the mountains right above my home... That just sounds very, very cool to me. We get some big, migratory bucks here, but they're pretty much a late season, or post-season deal. Don't see many of them here in August & September, they're still up in the high country.

I think this is eight years of putting in for that tag though. Phooey.

The cow elk thing bugs me a bit though - dang - gooseggs on that for six years now. Never figured it would be so hard to draw a cow elk tag for the local area. Man was I wrong!

Ah well, no big deal, we'll hunt the general seasons. It's usually good enough to put some venison in the freezer and enjoy. Do have some decisions to make though, about which of the general seasons to put our biggest effort into:

September "high buck" hunt for mule deer up in the Wilderness Areas

October general season for mule deer here in the local hills

November late season for whitetail over in the northeast part of the state

We'll figure it out and make something interesting happen!

Guy

Yikes Guy sorry you did not draw anything. I won't tell you how many points I used to get the cow tag . That quality buck does sound like a fun hunt. My cow tag is in GMU 162 Dayton area. should be interesting.

Joe sorry you did not draw anything either. This is only the second time in my hunting life I have drawn anything. Last time was a doe permit my wife and I put in for and got.

Corey

Congrats on the elk tag Corey! What are you going to carry up the mountain?

I am really looking forward to being out in your part of the world in a few months.

Oregon, down around Mt Emily. I usually drive in the Northern route thru Washington. Can't wait. It's a good road trip.

Corey,
Congrats on that draw! I know how you feel, as the wife and I finally pulled antelope tags for NM. It's been a long time coming, about a life time now I guess. We finally came to our senses and will leave the boy (almost two) with his grandparents and only haul my little girl (almost four) for the hunt. We figured that out on hike last weekend. Then it's on for bow elk. I'm excited, as I'll be shooting Slick Tricks this year. This is the first time I've been able to get my hands on them. I've never heard anything bad about them, so I've got my fingers crossed! Starting to get the itch to put a new barrel on my jacked up FN Mauser in .243 with too small a barrel. I'm starting to kick around the idea of a .260. Lapua makes some nice brass and there are worse things than a 140gr 6.5 at a little over 2800fps!
Joe

That sounds like a good trip with your daughter and wife Joe. That is the way to get them started, right!

You aren't the only one looking at a small 6.5.. I think a 260/6.5 Creedmore would be a very nice little set up and be fun to shoot too.

Joe you are a braver person than I. Not sure I could have taken my kids that young out with me. I think its great don't get me wrong, just think I could do it. .260 sounds like it would be a good all around rifle caliber. I've never played with one.

Corey

16 yr old son drew cow tag cowiche rifle
13 yr old son drew palouse buck tag and second deer tag both rifle

That's great! You could fill a freezer and then some!

Congrats on the draws, and best of luck on the season!
