So this will be a rather long drawn out process, but it all started on Thur eve when my 6ry old son asked me when we were going Coyote hunting. Initially I thought that was great coming from him since we'd never gone out specifically just for that. I think he put 2 + 2 together and came up with 5. He's head me speak of my hunting buddy and I quite frequently going out and chasing yotes @ night with the spot-light. Long and short, Grandpa bought him a Savage Cub T For Xmas and mid Jan for his birthday a illuminated reticle scope to go on it... hence he's now ready to go yote hunting since his scope lights up
Up @ 4:30 a.m. Sat....fiddle dink around and finally get him all clothed up and ready to get out of the house....( it's 13 degrees out ) Camo Coat, black snow pants & camo hat.... were hunting basically mowed down corn field with snow on it.
After an hours drive were there and ready to get out and go set up. This is a one set wonder of a place, 50 miles for one setting.
Needless to say after teh snow pants rubbing together, the snow boots dragging across the ground, him YELLING at me every 10 ft to say DAD, LOOK>>>COYOTE TRACKS....we ended up seeing 3 yotes. I tried every trick in the book that I at least knew of, but couldn't get them called in close enough for him. The first one was @ 200 yds broad side. The next two.. one of which was almost black were at about 400yds.
Dad had a serious itchy trigger finger sitting behind the new .257 Bee with the 6 X 18 varmit reticle Leupy, but never took a shot in hope to get one called in close enough for my son to see. All in all we had a BLAST !
Day Two ( Sunday ) Wife and Son left for Wyo Sat night and I have visions of my fist almost black yote. Plan on sighting in a few rifles after the calling session too.
Wake up @ 4:30 Again... half way to my destination I realize I've left the Swaro Bino's on the Kitchen Counter. I can't function without my Binos !! Now I'm P.O'd before I ever get there and decide my yote weapon of choice this a.m. will be my .300RUM w/180gr B-tips.
I get there, all is normal... park the truck, get the heavy coates on and walk up the field a ways and get ready to start calling. This is issue #2.. here comes someone else in a truck coming around the other way doing the same thing I am except they have no intentions of getting out of the truck, so they drive right into the middle of where I'm set up to start calling....I'm thinking game over.... They look around and take off, but I'm fully expecting that my morning is over.
Now I'm fuming... I decide to wait 20min and try to start calling.... I call two different times and then decide I need to now use my scope to start scannning around and loan and behold.. Mr. Yote ! Now he's not coming directly at me and he's at about 400 yds, but he's on a slight agle to pass by me.... as I'm watching him come along Issue #3 as he jumps Mr. Jackrabbit  The chase is on...........At this point I'm thinking I should have stayed in bed, but the chase only went about 50yds and the rabbit got away.
Extremely long story short.... he finally presented a standing broad side shot @ about 300yds. WOW !! He ended up @ about 305yds after the 180gr B-tip hit him square in the shoulder
No matter how many times I've told myself in other situations that the Game is over, it's only over if you leave the field.
