I've seen this caliber on reamer lists and in custom die lists. Heard little bits about it now and then. Seems like a 243 win case blown out to a 40 degree shoulder with 243 WSSM performance, minus some of the throat erosion and luck of the draw rep of the super shadow m70 in the accuracy dept. And yes :grin: , uses 243 win brass as well.

It seems to me that a competent smith could take a Rem 700 Varmint or 700SPS varmint in 243 and rechamber it to 243 AI with relatively little effort. There is a wealth of information and knowledge among the members of this forum, so somebody has to have some information on this round. If so, please enlighten me. Most likely I will plan forever and mayber build one 5 years from now, but that is the fun part......

Just got my 700 SPS Varminter 243 Win back in the spring and thinking about turning it into a 243AI.
 
The 243Ackley Improved is one hot little round. If you are willing to go to all the trouble that this wild cat will put you through in brass and load development, with the extra gain in velocity and for sure shorter barrel life, then have fun. I have owned many wild cats and some were Ackley Improved versions and they are a lot of work and I think the 240 Weatherby is an easier way to go. If I were you (and I am not) I would stay with the 243 because it is truly one fine round. Load work and development is easy to obtain accuracy and very good velocities and factory ammo is available in a pinch if you forgot or do not have time to reload.
 
I have one in the Encore, honestly I can't see any significant gain. Other than the cool factor and possibly longer case life, that family of cases just don't gain much volume by AI'ing. I measured mine once and if I remember correctly, only got a 1.5 gr. increase over the commerical. Plus they are fairly high intensity rounds to begin with, so not much room for bumping up the pressures. Mine has real tight chamber, and I still can't load to max published loads weight wise. Velocity increase I'm figuring only about 50 fps gain. But without doing a b4 and after it's hard to tell.
Great round either way, and nothing wrong with going to the AI, I'm just saying I wouldn't expect major diffeernces.

The 243 win is great, and for the cost a great varmint or WT rifle. Bullet selection is wide and it is an easy chambering to load for. No complaints there.

I like unique rifles, but not if it is a tremendous amount of time in case prep etc. I'm still tied up building a 264 on a savage 111, so I'll have to finish and fine tune that one before I try anything 6mm.

Bullet was right on saying that a factory chambering is better than a Wildcat if one hasn't got alot of time to play at the reloading bench. That is why I went with a 264 for the Savage. THe 240Wby or 243 WSSM would both outperform a 243 AI. Thanks for the info.

+1 agreed with Dave. The little you stand to gain is not worth the cost of reaming and fire forming the brass and then loading with your hunting load after figuring out the best "ackleyized" load. I feel the 243 win is good within its parameters as is and if you want more, just get a 6mm remington with its longer neck and a faster twist barrel. But, there is that cool factor about the AI with that sharp shoulder. I think P.O. Ackley saw the biggest benefit in "ackleying" the 22-250 of all cartridges he played with. He was a little over the top in his older days, from what I have read. I had a 243 with a slow twist that loved 70-75 grain bullets the most and what I found was very accurate loads with the fire form loads not even close to the potential of the standard chambering. Check out the 6mmBr site that talks about the Ackley a lot more before making the final decision. IMO if you don't go to a faster twist to shoot the heavy bulllets faster, there really is no gain.
 
How bout a 6mm WSm with the reg 35 degree or better yet a 44 degree Improved sjoulder. The regular is 78 grns case capacity and the improved would be about 80-82...... Basically a 243 with a 300 wby case to feed it. Can we say Heavy bullet/Long Barrel?? Would be deadly with DTAC 115s hehehehe Don't want to now how fast the 70 grn BT's would go. Bang, SPLAT!!! :twisted: :twisted:

Would a 1-8 or 1-7.5 twist destroy 70 or 80 grn Bt's or would they handle the fast rate?? Be a real hoot I think.

PacNor has a reamer on their list and dies are 126 from Graf for Redding dies.

Anybody use the Redding bushing sets?? I wonder if I could use a 270 WSM set and use a smaller 6mm bushing??
 
Go for the Ackley! I have two Acklerized rifle - both are tack driver. Brass trimming is nonexistent and fireforming is a breeze. Below is the side by side comparison of both standard and Acklerized round. To the left is the 338 Lapua Ackley and to the right, the 223 Remington.

Actually from what Ive read (and seen in Ackley's own book) his greatest percentage of velocity increase for an "Acklied" cartrige was the 250-3000 Savage. According to Ackley his fastest load in a standard 250 Sav with 100 ghrn bullet clocked 2,925 with 37 grains of 4064. The Ackley shoved the same slug along at 3271 woth 40 grains of the same powder. Sorry not to high jack your thread. I dont have Ackley's figures for the 243. Big advantage to the 250 Ackley was the ability to load 125 grn bullets. 42 Grains of 4350 would reportedly move them along at 2,950 fps. That would give any 243 a run for the money.....or better.
I really think about it....but the old 250 shoots so good I'm scared to mess with it.
 
I limited pressurs to 60Kpsi and picked 3 random bullets to give you an idea.

I tried to post the prints I was emailed by Pacific Tool for a 6mm WSM 44 degree shoulder, no luck. The prints are just specs anyway, nothing to scale.

I'm taking my time with this project, if I get a reamer and HS gauges ordered before spring I'll be ahead of schedule. My 264 build was way to haphazard and didn't come togather as well as I would have liked.

I am with Desert Fox on this one, go with the 6mm Ackley Imp. It is an outstanding round in that it is accurate fast and forgiving at the loading bench and recoil is not an issue with it and you are getting so much with the cartridge. Of course I am a fan of anything that comes off the 06 case.
