i was told today by a friend that loads for the 300 wsm, that he uses only larger rifle primers, except for ball powders he uses magnums. besides dealing with real cold temps, i wonder what the advantage is in using magnums? maybe this is the key to finally getting my 300 wsm to shoot.

Your friend is correct. Because of the shorter powder column, the large rifle primers will work just fine to ignite your powder charge. In extremely cold weather, or perhaps with ball powders (though that is not the final determinate for my own loads), a magnum primer may be preferable. You won't hurt a thing, however, if you work up your loads with a magnum primer. It is just that if you don't have any on hand, the LR primers will work just fine.

I use CCI250's for my 270WSM. As Mike says, you probably don't need to, but I do. I can't really see any detriment to it, as I am getting good accuracy out them. Pretty much I use CCI BR2's or CCI250's for everything else. Scotty

Spent quite a bit of time developing loads for my son's 7mm WSM. We settled on WLR standard primers with RL-17. Got the best accuracy with RL-19 using them also. Tried Win magnums and CCI 250's also.
My 7mm-06 likes the CCI 250's better using H4350. Go figure.
