Looking at a return to Wyoming for mule deer, Nov 2011, a year from now.

Rather than backpacking/hiking in this time, my pard and I are considering getting packed in on horseback, setting up a spike camp with our backpacking gear and hunting from there. Then the packer would come pick us up a few days later, hopefully with mule deer bucks down. Am getting prices around $1000 or so for the job of getting us and our gear in, then returning and getting us, our gear and hopefully two bucks out several days later.

Does that sound about right? Haven't paid for a packing job before. Always backpacked, or occasionally went in with a friend who has horses. Have to tell you, the $1000 split between the two of us doesn't sound bad to me - and keeps me from backpacking in a 50+ pound hunting pack... And likely an 80+ pound pack on the way out.

Exactly? Funny man... Not on an open forum, last time we saw NO other hunters and I'd like to keep it that way.

In general, not far from the east edge of Yellowstone. Have hunted there a couple of other times. 4x4 in '07, doe in '09, buddy took a tall 3x3 in '09. We're nipping at the edges of a good area for big bucks I believe. Saw one nice one that we couldn't take, too far of a shot and no real way to go get him across that deep canyon...

Of course, once we pay someone to pack us in, it won't be a "secret" anymore. Not really a secret now, just a tough hump in.

No problem, I can respect that. Just wanted to see if you were going to be near here. Opposite side of the state though.

Guy that sounds more than reasonable to me, getting packed in gives you more energy to hunt etc. I believe it will make a more enjoyable hunt for you and your partner. Be sure there are no hidden costs or surprises on the price quoted. I had an experience in Colorado after the guy packed us in 10-miles and dropped me and my partner off, he said oh yeah if you have more than 1- animal to be packed out it will be an additional............. This was after we had met with this outfitter/packer earlier in the Summer and went over what we expected plus we stated we had multiple tags for game. He said not a problem. This was with a written contract agreement we signed too. Just a heads up, go into it with your eyes wide open. Ask a lot of questions. My experience was not the norm for outfitters/ packers but they can try to pull some fast ones at times.
