Scotty ran me a bunch of Quickload data that I am very thankful for. If one of you guys would run one more load for me it would be greatly appreciated.

One that I somehow missed is the 358 Norma Mag - 200 gr TTSX with Big Game powder, I could run that bullet with RL 15 which Scotty ran for me but would like to save that for my 35 Whelen for the time being. I measured the case capacity at 92 gr water filled up to the top of the neck. Barrel is 22" long

I fired some 275 gr Woodleigh loads today prone and it is a bit more recoil than I like in an 8 lb rifle, I can shoot it accurately but it isn't much fun. Want to give the light mono bullets a try and see what it is like. Moose season opens in 1 week and I'll carry the Whelen but wouldn't mind taking the Norma out too.
 
Changed max case capacity to 92 grains. Hope this helps.

The Norma would be a great punch for moose, Gerry. Trust it works well for you.

Just loaded some up all the way up to 77 gr of Big Game, I'll let you guys know how it all works out. Thanks again.
 
That's funny Gerry, my 375 Ruger cases reformed in 35 Newton are only 90 grains of H20 when fire formed. The Norma cases must have a little more space.

I haven't ran any 200's from the Newton but man, I bet I could crank em. The 225 ABs run out around 2900 and change.

As promised I got out and did some shooting with the 358 NM, my 260 Rem and my wife's 6.5x55, all the guns shot very well when it came to accuracy.

I'm closing in on a good elk load using the 140 gr Partition and a practice load that hits exactly in the same spot in my wife's 6.5x55, my 260 needs a bit of work since I was getting high pressure signs for some reason.

Now the big 358 NM.....

200 gr TTSX - 76 gr Big Game - 2998 fps in a nice tight cluster dead center 2 inches high

200 gr TTSX - 77 gr Big Game - 3067 fps, grouped nicely as well but a inch higher and to the left.

225 gr Partition - 75 gr Big Game - 2810 fps, don't really trust that reading since it was pouring rain and towards the end I was getting some odd things happening. Used up my last 225 gr PT bullets too :lol:

I'm going to load up some of the first ones, the 200 gr TTSX at 3000 fps is going to hit very hard and they are hitting exactly where I want them to. I can't really show you the targets since it was pouring rain which didn't do the paper any favors.

For those in the future who read this that own a 358 Norma here is another load I worked with earlier in the year. I have a 22" barrel on my gun.

250 gr Speer Hot Cor - 72 gr Big Game - 2741 fps this was also nicely accurate.

With the 225 gr PT and AB I got to just above 35 Whelen speeds and ran out of bullets. I'll likely just run the 200 gr TTSX or maybe the 250 Gr Partition and Hot Cor from now on.

Hope this helps and thanks to all who gave me a hand with this data, Big Game certainly is an excellent powder for this cartridge.
 
Yep, just loaded the brass up again tonight and now am all set for both the 35 Whelen and 358 Norma. I'll probably carry the Norma for moose here using the 200 gr TTSX load at 3000 fps and carry the Whelen this winter in the Peace for antlerless elk using my go to load which is the 200 gr AccuBond at 2840 fps.

I'll do some more work with 250's sometime and hope to come up with a good load using Partitions, the 250 gr Speer's did well. The gun is very accurate and the RCBS dies combined with Norma brass are producing loads with virtually no run out, I'm pleased with how it has all worked out.

Now if Nosler can come out with 250 gr AccuBond or an ABLR for their new 35 Nosler based off the 26 Nosler case we will be all set ;)

Thought I should update this. In short no moose this year for us, there were bulls in all the spots we hunted but the thick brush makes it hard to see them. It rained so hard for two weeks leading up to our 1 week season and poured the first few days that everything was flooding. I had a hare come within 3 feet of me as he was wondering why his home was flooded out. I couldn't get into the area I wanted to because of all the water so hunted closer to the road. They purposely give us this week since it is traditionally the worst weather of the year and after the rut the bulls are hard to find but that's another story........

It was crowded out there, I had a guy not too far from me on the road attempt to "call" a moose, he ended up badly scaring the bull that was about 50 yards from me that I didn't know was there until he took off. Sadly my partner was there on the last day and told me this bull was poached in a near by no shooting area :(

We gave it a good shot and are happy with that, I hope to get out with my Whelen on Saturday and see if I can get a mountain goat before the season closes on Nov 15th. The rut will be starting soon and the billies will already be very interested in the nannies now.
 
I feel your pain, Gerry. I am pleased that you gave it a good try though. I have no doubt you would have made a good account of the Norma had the opportunity presented itself. See you this winter when you come over for elk. I've seen several good herds wandering around. It has been a mild fall and they are all fat.
 
Maria is looking forward to us coming out and hopefully get an elk or two, we surely could use some meat in the freezer. We are planning at the moment to come around Christmas time when I will have 2 weeks off. Good to hear they are doing well with the mild weather, it of course has been pretty mild here to with almost non stop rain.
 
To bad about the moose hunt Gerry, I'm sure you well connect on another hunt pal :)

I'm leaving for Newfoundland Saturday night, and have been watching the weather forcast for next week, it looks good so far, but that can change in a hurry pal, I don't mind the cold, but I surely don't like the rain at all :roll:

I fired the 200 gr TTSX load out to 300 yards today from the sitting position at some steel, only missed once so not too bad, I have to say the recoil isn't bad at all compared to the prone position and 275 gr Woodleigh bullets :shock: That bullet at 3000 fps should drive deep which is a nice thing about light mono bullets they are flat shooting and kick noticeably less than the heavyweights. I think I'll keep it around for a while just need to fix the ejection problem on it which should be fixed with a new spring behind the extractor.
