Not many rats have a pouch and three babies on the go at once all at different stages of development. It is part of the reason so they are so prolific. Can’t walk backwards either. They are a truly unique mammal.

What is the typical cartridge used for hunting them?

223 would be the most common I would suspect. On a big buck roo, you would want to head or neck shoot them as their sternum is very hard and some have very well developed shoulders. Having said that, you wouldn’t need anything more than a 243 or the like.
