Public Land Fall Longbeard/Tom Hunting Tips & Advice

I've been out and about looking for spots recently. With the recent cold snaps, the vegetation is changing color nicely. Finding sign is proving to be very difficult, much more so than in the spring. There are bugs and nuts on the ground everywhere. With food this plentiful, I doubt any flocks are concentrating in specific spots. I'll keep at it.

Fall turkey hunting involves a lot of walking and calling to locate birds and find fresh scratching. This is complicated when there is a good nut crop as they won't be located at one food source. It's a process that can be enjoyable.

it's about the same in my area . we have an abundant acorn crop this year . there are numerous apple trees in my neighborhood , and lucky to have seen an apple or two on any one of the trees . don't forget to watch around any grassy openings , I have seen some , here and there , hanging around them . I'm guessing looking for grasshoppers , or other bugs . "IF" you can find fresh scratching , try to follow it . you might be able to sneak in on them . things are changing for me , I'm starting to see more deer than turkey . yesterday was our first day of archery season . the woods has seen more people , over the past week or maybe two weeks . this has changed the way the animals are acting . I'm not seeing the people , but I do see their tracks and trail marking ribbons . just the presence has changed the animals behavior .

I have some excellent grassy patches to work with right now, so that's why I'm sticking to this general area I've scouted before moving on. It's a season of change, like you said, with animal behavior and more people out. In the coming weeks, everything will change dramatically as far as access goes. Right now, my spots are hard to get to, but that's mostly due to vegetation and not elevation or other factors. I'm looking forward to progressing with the season.
