After much thought and consideration I’ve selected my .416 Remington Magnum Ruger No. 1 as my rifle of choice for Cape Buffalo.
It’s my only single shot rifle and while I have another rifle suitable for Dagga Boys I really want to hunt them with every opportunity given to the Buffalo. I’ve got two diseases that are eventually fatal. One I’ve had for almost fifty four years. I’m living proof that with God’s blessing and good doctors you can live a full life. I however know that it will catch me in the end.
My musical icon, who I was blessed to shake hands with when I was five years old died from complications of the disease. After I was diagnosed with the disease, while he was still playing, I got to meet the best third baseman my beloved Cubs ever had. I watched the disease take his legs and his life. I’ve seen it take more legs, toes, and other body parts than I care to mention being that I’ve worked in the medical field for twenty plus years.
Next year in November will be fifty-five years of battling this disease. Disease number two started showing up a couple years ago. I’ve already decided I’m not going to treat it. I’m just hanging on trying to get back to Africa for one more trip. If I’m blessed to make anymore trips after that just put it on my ledger.
I want to hunt in November because that’s when I was diagnosed with diabetes. Right after my seventh birthday I got told I was a diabetic. I’ve had a great life and done things most people only dream about. I still have my legs, toes, kidneys, and stuff but the second disease will get me before the diabetes does. I’m not treating it because my quality of life would go to heck and I’d rather not have diabetes be my demise.
Until I go, meet my maker, I’m going to take care of myself, live a good life, and have fun. Just don’t tell me to get cancer treatment because it ain’t happening.
