Tagged out on 200lb meat bear, 300 yard shot, bear dropped on the spot. Double shoulder shot with my brno 8x68s at 2820 fps, found the 224gr RWS cone point bullet on the off side. Recovered weight 134gr, so 60% weight retention. Bullet in my opinion is on the softer side, will get around this...
9.3x62 for me. Personally like the metrics in general, the history they come with. The Mauser 98's and clones. Used 285gr PPU bullets during my 2014 season. Did great on moose, deer, and bear. Great penetration.
Hard to pick one but as of lately I've been really enjoying the Sauer 100 and 101 models. Have them in 6.5x55, 8x57, and 9.3x62
Really like the ergonomics on them and longer LOP.
A few of my Mauser's are also top picks. I tend to rotate between them depending on weather or what I'm hunting, and...
I used 280 rem data in my 7x64. 175gr Hornady Interlock with 57.5 grs of IMR 7828SSC at 2740 fps w/22 inch barrel. Took a spike fork bull with it in 2017. Worked great!
The 325 WSM an
I was about to buy one last weekend. BDL in good condition with sights with a set of new dies and 50 PCS of New Nosler brass, for 1150 Cdn (830 USD). I then was reminded of several forums mentioning a lot of these guns were a hit or miss in the accuracy department. So I held...
Finding brass for these time proven cartridges is no feat. They with stood the test of time and aren't going anywhere, even during the shortages and during coivd, PPU or Lapua brass was and is still abundantly available in 6.5x55, 9.3x62, 8x57 and for the 7x57 lots of PPU and S&B available.
1. 308 win-great options for factory ammo and rifles
2. 338 Federal-duplicates the performance of my favorite cartridge, the 8x57.
3. 7mm-08, Modern day 7x57
4. 243 win- despised this cartridge for years, for no particular reason.....after setting up my nieces with one and watching them harvest...
1. 30-06- For its history and abundant choice of rifles and ammunition available.
2. 8mm-06- 200gr at 2800 fps, makes for a great moose gun
3. 270 Win, flat shooting and time proven
4. 280 rem- good compromise between the 270 win and 30-06
5. 338-06- Nice heavy hitter w/ low recoil.
The 8x57 is my favorite. The 7x57 a close second. As for third place, I'd have a hard time choosing between the 6.5x55, 7x64, and 9.3x62. I really like all of them to be honest.
A couple others I have is the 8x64s and 8x68s but haven't used them yet.
Cut my mule deer tag this weekend. 80 yard shot with Fox Classic all copper bullets. 8x57 with 160gr at 2860 fps. Deboned weight was 124lbs of clean meat, looking forward on having sausage made out of him.
Here's another bullet recovered from the weekend. My brother in-law tagged out on a rutting mule buck. 200 yard shot. 8x57 using my hand loads 180gr Nosler ballistic tip at 2630ish fps out of a 19" barrel. Bullet hit the shoulder, entered the diaphragm and did a sharp turn, went through the...
Any all around cartridge starting from 6.5mm with a good quality bullet would work with ease. Can you do it with smaller cartridges? For sure, but you'll be waiting for perfect broadside behind the shoulder shots. I'd rather have the extra HP/weight to get penetration in quartering shots...
