2026 Moose Season Rifle

For 2026 I am going to give my Rem 700 XCR2 in 338 Rum some hunting time ! It’s been many years since I carried it. I loaded up some Ramshot Grand and 250 LRX to try this spring at the range for Sep moose season.

I shot most of my bull moose with a 338RUM and a 250 AccuBond. Terminal performance was always excellent. Most bullets passed through on broadside shots. I'd expect a Barnes bullet to have less expansion but greater penetration. Velocities in my 26" bbl ran about 3,000fps.

I think Ramshot Grand is a good matchup for the 338 RUM and 250 gr bullets. I'm starting to use Grand in my 6.5 Wby RPM with excellent results. I'll try it in the 338 RUM with the 250 gr AB come spring.

H1000 seems very scarce and Retumbo the same here. I have a pound of each on my shelf but I thought I would give Grand a try this Spring at the range.

Have not cronograph it yet but expect between 2900 to 3000 FPS.

This winter I installed a 3” Arca Rail on my Rem 700 in 338 RUM so I could use it on my Tripod. This should help alittle on recoil with the XCR2.
